So what are the odds on this; Ulcers?

I'm being flippant (my way of dealing with things) but what are the odds on two bassets both having their right eyes removed within a couple of months due to ulcers :(:(.
Two of Ottos many issues are autoimmune & blocked tear ducts, eyes bathed twice daily over the years to alleviate the latter; at vets this P.M. for his cartrophen injection. looked down at him under the florescent lighting & my heart stops. A few mins later my worst fears are confirmed, hourly drops throughout the night, no breakfast & then back to vets, it's large & deep so we're fearing the worst. Poor little chap, no dog/Basset should ever have to put up with what he's stoically dealt with.

Okay - reading your email this morning I'd gone to stomach ulcers. Clearly this isn't the case and it's ulcerated eyes? Hopefully once you are back from the vet's this morning you'll be a bit clearer with all of this. Yes, Mannie had an ulcer on one eye which was debrided and drops given. The heal wasn't as good as hoped so he had the third eyelid tacked across to form a bandage. Fine except he managed to paw the stitches out after a few days (can't remember how long) but the good news was he'd achieved a 90% heal already. It was thought the ulceration was caused by a scratch at some point, but actually it was a deterioration of the structure of the eye. We managed to keep it all under control but then a tumour was discovered at the back of his mouth which was malignant so we had to concentrate on that! He was in his 13th year so basically the old chap was wearing out. Despite the tumour being removed with what they hoped was wide enough margins, another even more aggressive one appeared at which point we called it for him.

I'm sure we'll speak later on.

Back at the vet this morning, no change, bloods taken (for organ functions) in case of removal. So home for breakfast & alarm clock set for continuation of hourly drops, options discussed were.
- PTS, never thought with his numerous problems he'd be with us at almost 11, O.H won't discuss it & vet doesn't think he's there yet. In all honesty nor do I but just well up with what he's had to put up with.
- A visit to the eye specialist on the mainland, discounted as not putting him through that.
- As no further deterioration, to continue with meds to see if it will respond & Kerry will also speak to specialist today for further suggestions.
- If no improvement, the probability of removal which having dealt with our other dog recently, reasonably O.K. with. BUT always vowed Otto would not be subjected to further surgery!
Hasten to add, even Kerry is surprised that it doesn't appear to worry him, although beating myself up that didn't see any signs.
Genetics (they are cousins), could be, Lucas had senile corneal oedema, at the time of diagnosis was given 4/5 years before server problems, within 3/4 months eye ulcerated very quickly & when removed about to rupture.
Fingers & paws crossed. Thanks F.M, back to vets 8.15 tomorrow morning, & Kerry will ring later with test results & any suggestions from Opti vet, she did try earlier but got no response.

Which is why I have learned over the years not to make blanket edicts because each situation in unique and we humans are not able to comprehend all the nuances possible until they happen. Any way hoping for the best and knowing you will make the best decision for Otto if it comes to that ,

Ahh poor things really sad they have to through it, its impossible to say dont beat yourself up etc you r only human its only in time you see you made the right decision whatever that is good luck and sorry to hear this , the basset seem to suffer so much. We have constant issues with ours though we love him to pieces however i do feel anrgy that all the media which play a part in us buying into buying these dogs i mean fred basset is where it started but we were all to in love with that to see that this isnt a real basset hound but one created and thus so bred and bred over the years and now suffers.:( again sorry to hear and i do hope evrything goes as well as it can :/
