Worried About Water

1604 Views 7 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Maggie's Mommy
2 weeks ago I switched my hounds to Eagle Pack Holistic Select Anchovy, Sardine & Salmon. They LOVE it!! I also did a switch with Wilson (the visitor). Everyone is eating great and producing nice poop! My concern is this:

All 3 of them are drinking almost no water! I would say my 2 are probably drinking 80% less! Also, Wilson is only taking a sip or two twice a day. I know the weather has been cooler but this is weird. I called Eagle Pack and they said they have heard that. Their food has a higher moisture content than alot of foods so the dog doesn't drink as much?? I have from the start of the food switch 2 weeks ago been adding some water to make a gravy. Do you think that's why?? To me, I'm not adding nearly as much as they use to drink?? They aren't due for their annual physical till the end of next month. They don't seem dehyrated?? I've tried the Reverse Osmosis tap, regular tap and spring bottled & distilled water. Same result?? Just looking for anyone's experience with something similar to this??

Patti, I'm going to switch to eagle pack too, just to see how they do. I'll let you know how it affects them , as Moose drinks gallons of water, but it makes sense that if the food is a better quality, they wouldn't need as much water.

Please avoid R/O and distilled water for drinking. At first I found it hard to believe but R/o and distilled water have been scientifically linked to depleting minerals in the body. Bottle water brands such as "disanni" which "purifies" the water does so through R/O but before packaging they add minerials for taste and also what I mentioned above.

From the World Health Organization
Health risks from drinking demineralised water
It has been adequately demonstrated that consuming water of low mineral
content has a negative effect on homeostasis mechanisms, compromising the
mineral and water metabolism in the body. An increase in urine output (i.e.,
increased diuresis) is associated with an increase in excretion of major intra- and
extracellular ions from the body fluids, their negative balance, and changes in
body water levels and functional activity of some body water managementdependent
hormones.
Experiments in animals, primarily rats, for up to one-year periods have
repeatedly shown that the intake of distilled water or water with TDS ≤ 75 mg/l
leads to: 1) increased water intake, diuresis, extracellular fluid volume, and
serum concentrations of sodium (Na) and chloride (Cl) ions and their increased
elimination from the body, resulting in an overall negative balance if it is not
adequately compensated from food, and 2) lower volumes of red cells and some
other hematocrit changes (WHO 1980).

...Results of experiments in human volunteers evaluated by researchers for the
WHO report (1980) are in agreement with those reported in animal experiments.
Low-mineral water markedly: 1) increased diuresis (almost by 20%, on
average), body water volume, and serum sodium concentrations, 2) decreased
serum potassium concentration, and 3) increased the elimination of sodium,
potassium, chloride, calcium and magnesium ions from the body.

...When used for cooking, soft water was found to cause substantial losses of
all essential elements from food (vegetables, meat, cereals). Such losses may
reach up to 60 % for magnesium and calcium or even more for some other
microelements (e.g., copper 66 %, manganese 70 %, cobalt 86 %). In contrast,
when hard water is used for cooking, the loss of these elements is much lower,
and in some cases, an even higher calcium content was reported in food as a
result of cooking (WHO 1978; Haring and Van Delft 1981; Oh et al. 1986;
Durlach 1988)[/b]
Did you call your vet to see what they say about them not drinking much water?
Just curious to know if you are still having a problem with the dogs not drinking as much water?
Yes, I am. They still aren't drinking much at all?? I called Eagle Pack dog food and the Rep. I spoke to said she has heard this before. Not on a daily basis but she has heard this. They are not dehydrated. Everyone is peeing okay so I am adding some tap water to their meals twice daily to make sure they are getting enough. It's just weird???
Since we switched to Wellness brand, Button and Elmer arent drinking as much water as they used to. When they were on Science Diet, they drank much more. I have also always put warm water on their kibble, not enough to make it mush, but to give it more gravy texture. It's still pretty crunchy, even with the water. I thought the old food must have had more salt?
Eagle Pack cautioned me NOT to use warm water on their food that I'm feeding. The Rep said it will destroy the yogurt cultures & the nutrients in the food. It is okay to add room temp water so I do.
