Can I do it from yahoo photos? Pics are available for public viewing in my preferences. I put the URL in from the page properties, and the little pic pops up in the box. "Update profile" to save the changes, but still no avatar? when I go back in to edit profile it is blank again. What am I doing wrong?

I think it's because it's on Yahoo, I think they don't allow pictures to be linked for posting, only for viewing on the site.

Try a photo hosting site like photobucket.com (free). I know you can link from there, it's the one I use.

yahoo does not allow hosting for other sites you need to use one of the other free photo sites that allow hosting. or if your ISP provides free web hosting as part of the price you can use that space but it generally require an FTP program to upload pics but they are free as well such as
smart ftp
