I know that dog food topics have been discussed generally throughout the board, however I would like to see some of the opinions of my fellow basset hound lovers on what you like to feed your basset. I will start first.

Me and Fred have had the dog food BLUES! It was very difficult to find Fred some food with great nutrition, without corn or wheat that he liked. He was having houndy odor problems, frequent pooping, along with soft stools because of the food he was eating.

Well, I switched him to Nutro Max and he liked it, but it was really busting my pockets real bad. Fred LOVES TO EAT and run, so paying over $40 for a 33lb bag of dog food was becoming expensive.

I finally found a dog food that he loves that does NOT contain the ingredients that would be bad on my dear boy Fred. Fred is NOW on Diamond Naturals - Lamb and Rice, which contains absolutely NO CORN OR ANIMAL BY-PRODUCTS. For a 40lb bag, the cost was $26 WHICH IS WONDERFUL! :lol:

Fred loves it and his stools are small and firm, plus he doesn't poop as much (only twice a day).

Please share what brand of dog food you feed your basset and how it has been beneficial to your pup!

Wow, that sounds expensive for Nutro Max! I thought that was Nutro's cheapest line. Anyway, Stanley came to us in June from the breeder on Nutro Max Large Breed Puppy. We switched him to Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Puppy with no problems, but then as a first-time dog owner I was suckered...

The people at Petsmart made such a convincing argument for Blue Buffalo Large Breed Puppy Chicken and Rice formula that I gradually made the switch to that. How i wish I could go back in time...

Besides being quite a bit more expensive than Nutro, Blue Buffalo never meshed well with Stanley's tummy. I made the switch SLOWLY over almost 8 weeks on the advice of the Blue Buff rep and my vet, and Stanley's stools were always soft. I even took him to the vet in the middle of the switch because he was straining so badly. Now I'm getting him back on Nutro Natural Choice and already his stools are better. Blue Buff kept him growing strong and his coat looked great, but I couldn't stand watching my pup strain and have such loose stools.

I've done some research into Flint River Ranch and I think I will make the switch once he gets on adult kibble. It seems like they do things the right way in that company. For now, though, I'm sticking with Nutro Natural Choice (lamb and rice).

Of course, Stanley will eat anything and is a big boy...40 lbs. now at just over 6 months old!

Stickers has been eating Eukanuba Lamb & Rice for almost 2 years. She loves it. It's about $42 for a 35 pound bag. She get some pumpkin & green beans for lunch everyday. It helps her empty her anals. Rusty was on the same food but after a long bout with mucous covered stool and no end in sight, he is on Vet prescription food. He eats Royal Canin Hypoallergenic Diet. It addresses skin issues, irritable bowel & pancreatic problems. He LOVES it and also produces much less stool and it's smaller & firm!!! The down side is 37 pounds is $82!!!!!!!!!! He gets a small portion of fresh green beans and carrots for lunch just to fill his belly since I cut back the portion when he went on the Royal Canin. It's higher in fat.

Baxter eats Nutro Max vennison and brown rice and he loves it. I just paid $33 for the large bag. I used to feed the dogs Diamond brand until it was reported that dogs were dying from it. So I decided to stick with Nutro.

I was afraid of both Nutro and Diamond because of the pet food recalls. Now, I make sure that the date on the packages are no earlier than September 2007 and I don't give him canned wet food anymore from any of the brands listed in the recall. For a treat, I get Fred a package of ground beef, cook it and mix it with some of his dry kibble. :lol:

Also, I only buy Fred's food from Petco just to be on the safe side.

Yogi eats AvoDerm Natural Chicken and Brown Rice Oven-Baked Formula Adult Dog Food. I like this food because it doesn't have wheat, corn or animal by-products in it. I also like that the food is oven-baked. He loves it! He usually only poops twice a day, occasionally three. It costs about $36-$38 for a 30 pound bag.

My 2 are very picky and were on the dreaded BENEFUL for quite a time. I now have them on Nutro Natural Choice for sensitive skin and stomachs (lavendar bag).

The big question given the limited knowledge there actual is about canine nutrition if any single dog food no matter how carefully formulated . With that uncertenty in mind a rotate between three food that have the basic composition I qant which is high protein and high fat. over 30% protein and as high a fat content as available. It is well documented that fat is a much better and matabilzed caloric source for dogs than carbohydrates which often are not digestable. Higher protein level have shown to limit/eliminate soft tissue injuries in dogs. Because these foods have a higher caloric content per cup and more easily digested you need to feed less IMHO in the long run they are cheaper to feed then less costly foods. The particluar brands at the time are Eukanuba Premium Performance, Nutro Hi Energy and Royal Canin High energy 4700

Snoopy and Vanessa are on Nutro Max currently, we used to have them on the more expensive Nutro, but switched when Vanessa went to adult food and snoopy lost most of his weight. They love the nutro brand, use to only be able to get snoopy to eat Kibbles n Bits homestyle in the past, which led to a lot of his weight issues.

We get our Nutro at Petsmart and I don't recall even the more expensive Nutro being more than $35, we pay about $27 to $30 now.

We feed Eukanuba low residue. I often wonder if it is the best choice, but it seems to minimize the tummy upsets for the sensitive one, and both dogs wolf it down, and seem healthy.

Sharon: I fed low residue to my German Shepherd. I sometimes feel the same way about Rusty's Royal Canin. It is higher in fat than most but has put an end to his poop issues and he devours it. I just about fainted when I heard the price for the first time. But considering it's only him eating it and he gets 2 1/4 cups daily, it last almost 3 months so the price was easier to swallow

Maggie and I went through a lot of food before getting to vet prescribed Eukaneuba Fish and Potato.

I think becuase she had an undetected intestinal infection when she was younger while I tried out a bunch of different foods (chicken and rice, lamb and rice, etc.) she became allergic to most of those proteins and carbs.

The fish and potato is expensive - and I can *only* buy it at a vet - but it is the only one she is good with.

Does anybody feed Biljac? That was what the woman who was foster Henry and a bunch of other black and tans gave me when I adopted him and ever since then I've fed all my dogs 50% Purina Dog Chow and 50% Biljac on top and the dogs have loved it and I've never had any GI or poop problems. Just lucky?

You all are blessed, because here in Memphis its $40 for a 33lb bag. We have a food tax here and its about 10%. They just raised that tax a few years ago and it affects ALL food.

Bogie Carter dines on INNOVA Adult dry kibble. When all the recalls were going on INNOVA was the only company that did not have recalls of some kind going on that our local pet store carried. Bogie loves it, and we do add about 1/8 of a can of INNOVA canned food to the 1/2 cup of dry kibble he gets morning and night. He also gets 1/4 cup of plain dry kibble at bedtime to prevent "empty tummy syndrome" where he was getting us up at about 4:30 AM and barfing yellow bile.

Bogie has a beautiful coat, is full of pep and energy, and the vet says he looks great just needs to drop a few pounds he gained while confined for his torn ACL surgery to heal. We are working on that and are switching him to the Reduced Fat Adult INNOVA.

[Lightning&Stomps]

Chalk both mine up to Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice. Lightning gets the "lite" version. He eats very fast and seems to poop a lot. I'm working on slowing down his eating to see if that helps. Stomps also gets a can of Mighty Dog with each meal because he won't eat otherwise (believe it or not, the vet said feed him whatever he will eat). Both my dogs don't have stomach or skin problems and don't (in my opinion) stink. Some might argue that point in regards to Stomps though. As far as price, I know I don't pay as much as $40/bag, but I can't remember how much I do pay.

People often comment how beautiful her coat is.

All those omega-3 fish oils are what's good for her.

It does give her fish breath tho....but I'd rather have that then her normal breath in my face.
