Hi all - haven't posted in a while, but I 'lurk' a lot! I love looking at all the lovely pictures and reading the great advice.

We lost Merlin recently, and our hearts are just broken. He was very sick, and I rushed him to the vet, and discovered he had diabetes - at one point his blood sugar was up to almost 600! The vet wanted to keep him for about a week to regulate his blood sugar, and keep him on an IV to help him stay hydrated - and after 5 days, he thought Merlin could come home on the 6th day. That morning, he called and said that Merlin had passed during the night, and after an autopsy, discovered a very large blood clot that went to his heart. We had him with us for 10 years, and he certainly left a huge void.

Well, the next problem was our younger basset, Arthur has just been miserable without Merlin. He has become very clingy, howls and cries if left alone, he's mourning too. Today, we came upon a rescued basset, that is about 1 year old - so we brought her home. Arthur has been inseparable with her already - and even tho we're still so sad, our new little girl is certainly filling that void quickly. She is SO very sweet, I'll post pics in a few days (my camera was borrowed and not returned yet :) ). Her name is (of course) Guenevere :)

Here is a pic of Merlin, protecting his little brother Arthur - we miss him so much! Thanks for listening!

My heart goes out to you. It is always so hard to loose one of our furbabies!
I love the pic of him as Guardian Angel!

And congratulations on Guenevere! Sounds like her and Arthur are made for each other.
I eagerly await the pics!

I'm so sorry about Merlin. It's so tough to lose one of your fur kids. I'm so glad you have added another Basset to your family. Merlin will always be in your hearts and I'm sure he's smiling down on Arthur and Guenevere.

Thank you so very much for all of your kind replies - they are so helpful!

I do have a question for you - we've always had male bassets, is there anything I should know about the behaviors of female bassets vs males? So far, she does seem a little...sweeter, is the word I think I'm looking for :) Other than that, she definitely plays the same and eats the same! :)

We are sorry to learn your sad news about Merlin. Pleased that you have welcomed a new Hound into your home to keep Arthur company. Jake and Harvey Hound say "woof woof".

Same here, always had males but our most recent rescue is female, and we've found that she worries more about the whole family, humans and cat included. It's as if she's a little mom. She won't go for a walk unless her brother basset comes with her.

So sorry for your loss. Merlin had a great life and has left his paw print on your heart.

Good luck with Guenevere....it looks like another beautiful relationship is beginning.
