sam is having problem not being able to handle the salt or wheat in the dog treats. how much water does the average bassett drink a day? i am trying to keep him from becoming fluid overloaded.
Francis puts away a large bowl of water ( about a liter) a day. We go on a 2 mile walk every day and when he comes back he puts half of it away immediately. He then sips as he goes along. In the summer he gets about a bowl and a half a day, more if we're very active.
I have a 3 gallon auto-waterer that my two hounds use. I refill it every 5-6 days in the winter, and every 2-3 days in the summer. (They also drink out of the garden pond in the summer)
I don't know if they would drink too much water, but I'd rather have water available than to restrict their water, or to have them run out.
It's very odd  Since I put my kids on this new food they are drinking almost no water! The Vet said they look great, not dehydrated, nice poop. She said to make sure they are getting enough to add a total of 4 cups of water to their daily food portion. They eat 3 cups each daily, 3x's a day. Rusty has to have something in his belly every couple hours so it's easier to give them 1 cups for breakfast, lunch & dinner. I can't get them to drink!
I find it hard to figure out how much my hounds drink. I fill up their bowl as needed. Gibbs' bowl always goes empty first. 1. He does drink a lot, but also 2. Lily will not drink her water until his is gone. I would assume if your hound were drinking too much water there would be some type of sign. Hopefully Mikey T will chime in.
Fred drinks about 2 full bowls of water a day which is about 2 liters a day. He has always been an avid water drinker with any food I give him. (I rotate between Purina One sensitive systems and Purina Pro Plan for Sensitive skin and stomach.) Its kinda funny sometimes, because he'll lay on his side and give this real loud belch.
Sometimes (not often), he will drink water all day and night and not eat until the next morning. I thought something was wrong at first, but his breeder told me that his parents are finiky eaters and that as long as he is at a healthy weight, don't worry. The vet said the same when I took him for his checkup. (he is a whopping 52 lbs... )
yeah sam is wheezing and i am having to give him water pills and he is bloated. my baby is a mess or just old. i don't know how much of the wheezing is from water and how much is from the pollen
he is getting allergy shots now for the pollen down here. the cars are covered with it.
Hi
Have you tried putting vasaline around his nostrels to reduce the amount of pollen gettin gup his nose. it may not work on dogs, but it sure as hell works for me!. I have also been told to eat the local honey - something to do with the bee's/pollen etc...maybe sam could have some honey? It may all sound slightly mad, but it's worth a try.
