for those wonder what an AKC Field Trial is like

The gallary using Stick general ski pole beat brush to drive bunnies of of the Brush Spotters up ahead looking down the row look for these displaced bunnies and how and where they ran. Two dogs ramdomly drawn are placed on this line . ie bunny path and the dogs are judge on how well the follow the line of the bunny

Macey and Nancy Richmond's puppy "Poppy" who finished as NBQ (Next best Qualifier) From the First Brace of the First Series on Saturday Open all ages Bitches, This is the First Bunny of the day Both dogs opened but did not run it enough for the Judges to pick a winner. First time Poppy opened at a trial!!!
(open = bark on the line while pursue the bunny)

because the Judges could not decide or agree which dog did better the same two were later put on another rabbit. Macey was the only one I heard open on the line. While they over ran the line by a big margin Macey Found it again and started running it when the Judges picked them up (end the running of the dog) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LMtlccl-b0

this was great! It was fun to see the hounds gait change when they picked up the scent (their whole demeanor changes!)

it is different for each dog , some get happy tail, ect Maceys gate and drive changes more than her tail. If you watch and observe your dog you no when they are locked on it when the are close and when they thing well maybe something here vs there's nothing here.

At an Ahba hunt they called a dead track and were looking to move the dogs to a nesw spot. Macey and Eowyn were out of the "check area" but it was clear from Macey's movement that she was getting close to opening and moving a line 30 seconds latter they had the rabbit running and the Scoring those two did on that bunny was the difference in the Score in that cast. If I didn't know Macey's behavior I could of pulled her off that rabbit.

With two dogs down and running in an open area it can get competitive and a race an there is a tendecy for then to run faster than they should to maintain the line. That is they often over run (run past) where the rabbit moved back into the brush not Ideal running but typical. most losses of the line occur at the transition from cover to open area. and vice versa. In cover the rabbits move slower and lay down more scent . Cover provides more ground moisturewhich helps retains scent and less wind to move scent.
