my 5-year old basset hound has been diagnosed with a torn cruciate ligament. The vet wants to correct it with the old conventional procedure but when I went online to look for other ways to correct a torn cruciate ligament, I found out that there are several better ways to address the problem such as a TPLO or TTA.

Can you share your thoughts on this?

basset carry most of their weight on the front end ginve the joint size the tradidition method now generally reserved for small and toy breed probably would work but if it were my dog I would go with TTA surgery if the dog was a candidate over TPLO it is a bit less invasive. Coming from agility which is a sport with a higher level of CCL injuries roverery rates that allow the dogs full function and to compete is quite high, recover time are much faster bone heal much faster than ligament esecial ones with limited blood supply. IF the CCL
is torn but not ruptured you might want to look at stem cells as well I know several that swear by the results

The thing with CCLs is if one goes more than 50% of the time the other goes within two year. You need to keep this in mind in factoring in cost of the various options. I would also consider switching to a High protein in excess of 30% by weight, diet High protein diets have demonstrated a protective effect from soft tissue injury in performance dogs

I just had to bring my Niki to another vet for a second opinion and he said Niki needs to undergo the De Angelis Procedure which is commonly called Lateral Suture Technique or Extracapsular Repair.

We haven't really set the date for surgery but it will be around the end of this month. For the meantime, she's on strict crate confinement.

I've been doing research on the technique and this is what I've learned about the procedure:

The success rate after surgery is about 85% of the dogs will show
significant improvement. However, 50% of the dogs after surgery will still
show some signs of lameness, either mild or only after heavy activity while
the other 50% will regain completely normal function of their limb(s). The
patient will be administered pain medications to help them through the
recovery process, this part of the process is crucial. All dogs are mostly
greatly improved after the surgery is performed. The surgery is not a cure
for arthritis but supplements can help your dog with joint stiffness and
