Tips for choosing a pup?

Hi all. Been lurking the forum for a while but first time post :)

We're going to visit the litter that we'll be buying a pup from the day after tomorrow, well be choosing the pup and paying a deposit to hold her.

Does anyone have any solid tips on which traits to look for in a 6 week old pup?

Look at the parents and look for ears that go past the nose. Those are the 2 that we did. Check out the personality of the parents also. Look for the height also. You want them low not high. Hope that helps

My biggest tip is explain to the BREEDER exactly what you expect of your new puppy, and be guided by him/her! It's all too easy to see nothing but 'aaaah puppy', especially with puppy Bassets, but nobody knows more about each individual puppy in a litter than the breeder who will have been spending pretty much 24/7 with the litter, from birth.

It does depend on what you do want to be doing with your puppy - much as even if you might be thinking about showing, your puppy won't ALWAYS be your pet first. All ours were. And again Basset puppies change so much as they develop - which is why breeders who want a litter to keep one or two for the next generation, need TIME before making a final decision about which are 'best'.

Of course you should look for a healthy, happy, outgoing puppy with all the attributes of the Breed but you MUST also look at mum and if resident, dad too. The situation the litter is being reared in - ideally in the home where they will all be used to normal household noises by the time they go home. At 6 weeks only, this is pretty much all you can do when choosing the puppy for you. They change so much to the point that when you go back to collect your choice, other than markings, she may well have changed, a lot!

Be ready to take your puppy to your own vet for a health check - best done within 48 hours - I prefer people to leave a day between going home and seeing a vet so you don't overload the puppy with too much that's strange.

Good luck - I hope you have chosen a known reputable/experienced breeder. All too often the popularity of the breed means those with no business breeding, do, often with disasterous results for the breed.

puppy evaluations are notorious bad indicators of the adult dog and anything as early as six weeks is basically worthless. What can be accurate noted is (1) current marking but they will change size shape and color to some extent. and (2) excessive timidness/shyness/anxiety anything else is a crap shoot Even conformation. I would be highly suspect of any breeder expecting you to decide at 6 weeks, and even more so putting a deposit on at that age.

Most of the Bassets are people oriented and get along well with children, so they are a good choice for a household dog. Check out the puppies personality. Make sure he/she is friendly and easygoing. What's more, most professional breeders of pedigree dogs will not allow their pups to go to their new homes until they are twelve weeks old, although some breeders see eight weeks as a fair time to allow the puppies to leave, and taking home a puppy at eight weeks old is not uncommon. Releasing a puppy too early has no benefits for the puppy and can cause a host of sometimes irreversible emotional and behavior problems in dogs.

This was 4 years ago you went to see your pup… how did it pan out as we are going today?
