Hi everyone,
Pearl, my 4 year old basset will probably have to undergo emergency surgery today for an abdominal obstruction. We are worried...she's not a counter surfer, and we can't imagine what she got into, if anything. Keep your fingers crossed for us--the vet said that if it cleared miraculously by this am, we'd be ok, but I don't see signs of that.

Prayers and drool to all bassets today, and a speedy recovery as well.

Oh Sharon that's awful. Will be thinking of you both and hoping that surgery won't be needed after all.

Franny and I will be including you in our daily reflections. We sit in a beautiful nearby meadow; I reflect, Francis eats grass... It's worked for us. I truly send good wishes for a quick recovery.

Thank you every one for your kind thoughts.
Update on Pearl--yesterday morning, the vet said the barium scans looked better, and we were on a wait and see basis. She got cottage and rice yesterday, and seems to be doing ok. But we don't know if it was an obstruction that is clearing itself, or is just moving around, and could re-lodge, or something else (bad day, colitis). Please continue to think good thoughts, and if we get answer, I'll post. Some times these things just go away, and we never find out what was wrong.

As of tonight, Pearl is still 'under observation', but so far, she's starting to feel good again, wants to play her obedience 'games'. Since the vet said that avoiding surgery would be a 'miracle', I have to conclude that all that drool really did work. Thanks! The weekend will probably tell the tale, but all is well for now.

Sounds like slow, steady improvement. Will continue to keep fingers and toes crossed. :)

Thanks for asking. She is better, but not out of the woods. She's on a special diet (cottage cheese and rice or cottage cheese and eggs), and is keeping food down and eating. However, things do not yet seem to be moving through quite as they should be, and she looked a bit down today when I left for work. IF this keeps up, they will want to do an endoscopy, which is probably a good idea. Please continue to sling drool our way.

Was hoping all was well. I empathize-watching and waiting can be real tough on the nerves. :( Will be sending positive thoughts for Pearl's recovery.

Waiting and watching is horrible. I hate to admit it, but I was relieved when I dropped Molly off at the specialist before her surgery. I hope Pearl gets better real soon. Thinking of you both, Belinda.

Hi all,
I just wanted to follow-up this thread, to let you all know I haven't forgotten and thank you for the good wishes. Pearl has not had surgery. They still don't know quite what's going on, unfortunately. At this point, we are trying a low residue food (gradually) to replace her bland diet. If that doesn't work, she'll probably need some more diagnostic stuff--like a colonoscopy or ultrasound. Sigh.

I'm hoping its just a case of fussy basset tummy, and the food will take care of it, but time will tell. If it is, this won't be the first time I've had a major scare with a basset and food 'something'--allergy, or some condition that doesn't ever seem to have a name, so let's hope.
