Ok ...I finally have one for the argument against them. I have always recommended doggie doors as it was life-changing for us. The dogs come and go as they please. No trips home mid-day for walks, etc. It's all good.

Until this morning. Probably the worst dog experience to date.

Ten minutes before I had to walk out the door this morning, I was putting on makeup and doing hair. I heard some kind of melee in the living room but that's not unusual first thing in the morning. After a minute or so, Dixie comes sliding around the corner and stops and stares at me. Then takes off back to the living room. One more repeat trip, except with a whine. Tattle tale ... So I had to go see what was up.

Belly had a dead bird. In the living room. He had one paw on it and was chewing on the head. Crunching. I screamed. And screamed. He wouldn't stop and took off with the ...torso? ...into the dining room. Screaming, I followed and grabbed his tail. He dropped it.

When I started screaming (top of lungs) I noticed Ms. Dixie hunching down. When I looked at this point, she was on her back. ??? So I had to worry for a few seconds ...and then back to the bird. I grabbed the rug in the entryway and threw it over the bird.

I went after Belly, who smelled to high heaven. Got him, checked him. He's fine. Back to check Dixie and get rid of bird.

Dixie is now ON THE RUG!! On the bird. Feet stretched out behind her, tail wagging.

I just started crying and 911'd my husband at work. He gave instructions, which I guess I needed, and we got things under control. I did find more feathers when I got home for lunch but I'm not going to persue that. I will save this for Steve when he gets home.

Monday. :!: :x :x :x

I have to say, the only time Molly has caught a bird, it was still alive, and was obviously injured. She would put it in her mouth, spit it out, bat it around, back in the mouth, etc. I think the bird was in shock and by the time we finally got Molly away from it, I am surprised it did not have a heart attack!

Our bird experience related to my dear Samantha- who found a baby bird and carried it all around the yard cheeping it's little head off. She wasn't trying to hurt it... just carrying it around. We finally got it away and live in hope that it made it out of our yard safely-

Oh, you don't need a doggy door to experience Bassets' hunting abilities. Bella tries to take them down out of the sky, and once she succeeded. Came bounding into the bedroom and dumped her trophy on the bed. What a way to start the day.

That's so funny, I just went through that today too. One of them brought in a baby bird sometime during the night. I couldn't figure out what was on the floor this morning.
Even with all the things against having a dog door, I wouldn't be without one.

Oh ..yuck ....I just read the Father's Day post. Yes, they do act like these things are the grand prize. That look of disappointment is priceless.

Dog Door Surprises

Now, I rarely post, but always enjoy reading.

On the "what he brought IN the dog door", I have to respond.

Hub initiated us with a dead deer. Piece by piece. The stench woke us first. The night he tried to bring in the leg, sideways, by crashing it into the dog door woke us the second time.

He and his friend, our tabby cat, are quite a team....Bandit kills the bird, Hub brings it inside for him.

We've had 2 dead birds at our new house just since Feb. I'm reasonably sure, by the smell, that Hub dug up the 2nd one out in our yard somewhere.

Our favorite Dog Door surprise was a bag of frozen raviolis. Costco. We have NO idea where he found those.

Still, I wouldn't trade having the dog door.

Wow, sounds like you have a MAGIC dog door. I wouldn't trade it, either.

Even though I've been a victim, I mean recipient, of such a nice present, I find it funny too!

Faysie's original post on this thread pretty much captures what would have occured if Jeannie had found the Chipmunk, and it would have been the same scene if the bird event was here too!
Yes, hounds bringing in and eating or hiding a dead critter is gross. But I don't understand how it's worth the screaming & crying?
(Very sorry, I mean no insult. )
It must be a gender/individual human thing, man not get woman. :?

It's also great to know one or the other of my kids, Minnie or Dudley, will likely bring in other critters!
I have a pond/water garden, I think Dudley was stalking a frog tonight...

My girls' breeder has one that brings live frogs (or toads) in the dog door. She doesn't hurt them, just brings them inside and lets them loose. She's a full sister to one of mine. Thank goodness we don't have frogs in our area.

Ok..that's funny. I can just picture the Basset with a toad in its mouth.

Eww!

Imagine waking up to croaking INSIDE your house?

i dont have a dog door story but i have a bird story. i took sadie to the dog park and she starts after a bird taking off in flight. she leaps and takes the bird down and now has it her mouth. she continues to play with the poor thing batting it around like it was going to jump and play. i too am screaming which is doing no good...i am throwing treats nothing....i finally grabbed her from behind and hooked her up to the leash. i had to drag her out of the dog park kicking and whining the whole way......yikes
