the only once a month heartworm and wormer i give is equimax horse wormer paste one click on the knob once a month and my dogs are free from all internal parasites including tapes.
Tapeworm and fleas and other things...
Today I saw the creepy, crawling, "rice" bits in Bogs poo. I brought it straight to vet and they say its tapeworm. I have a pill to give him tonight and another one in two weeks.
Everything I am reading and what they say is that tapeworm comes from eating fleas, not usually from feces because the eggs dry out and die. I have Bogie on Sentinel, which is a heartworm guard that also controls/prevents hookworm, roundworm, whipworm, and prevents the development of flea eggs. I don't have him on a separate flea med.
I was wondering if anyone else uses sentinel and has had a similar thing happen or have any advice on if I should give him a separate flea med. The vet didn't seem to think I needed it, and I don't think Bogie has fleas, but he had to get tapeworm somehow...
Also, when I adopted Bogie two years ago, he had two little bumps, one on his ear and one on the pad of his foot. They haven't grown and all and the vet wasn't worried about them. I noticed he has developing a warty like thing on his right side that had been growing. The vet did a needle biospy on it and said there are blood cells in the warty thing, but nothing to be concerned of. I'm going to keep watching its growth and if it gets significantly bigger, bring him back to the vet. It doesn't seem to both Bogie when I touch it, but he typically does lay down on the left side. I've read that bassets seem to get these cysty things a lot, but it didn't seem like my vet knew that, so I was wondering if anyone could tell me about them.

Setinel does nothing to control adult fleas, theoretically over time it will control them but it would take months.
A topical treatment that controls adults and also has a growth inhibitor like frontline plus is a better choice than just a product that kill adult like frontline. It has been shown over time tha fleas will develop resistance to such products by combining with a growtrh inhibitor the resistent fleas can not pass their gene on to the next generation.
