Supplements

Does anyone here use supplements on their dogs food? I see there are many on the market that claim end to shedding, healthy coat and improved skin and allergy relief among other things. My boy Noonie has been plagued with ear infections for years. We've tried everything from changing diet to daily ear cleaning with presciption drops. So I'm thinking about maybe giving this a try, but wanted to see if anyone has used any of these products. Thanks in advance.

I've used supplements on older dogs, but never younger pups. In fact, because I've now had Yogi for 10 years, unless I'm mistaken (!!!!!), I'm getting ready to start him on Geri-Form, which is my own personal favorite older doggie supplement.

One thing you might consider is using Frontline, if you don't already. Frontline has cleared up many an ear problem for my pups with problematic ears, which means both Biscuit and Lady. I'm seeing the vet next Thursday, in fact, for my new pup because she's turning out to have ear problems. After that visit, I'll be putting the pup on Frontline to see if it's as effective for this pup as it's been for my others.
A few months ago I started using 3V Caps (omega 3's) for my boy, Yogi. His skin gets dried out in the winter from the heating system in the house so I started them a few months before the heat needed to be turned on and I do think that they are helping him. He is not nearly as itchy as usual. Humidifiers also help with the dry skin. He also has allergies which flare up from time to time so I decided that I am going to keep him on them year round since they are supposed to help with them as well.
I used to give our dogs a fatty acids supplement for the skin and coat. It definitely made their coats soft and silky. However, since I switched to Innova Evo food, I have been able to drop the supplement. Their skin and coat are as good or better than before, when they were on a different diet. The Innova is expensive, but so was the supplement. This company is also very up front about the origins of the ingredients, very important these days.
A couple of years ago, Pearl had an on again/off again limp that was never diagnosed. One of the vets recommended 3V caps. The limp went away, but I noticed it was also good for the skin, so they both get those. Every so often, I cut back on the 3V caps and given them some Missing Link.
Are these 3V caps (omega - 3/s) and missing link (?) rx'd by the vet?

BTW, I take omega-3's myself. Can these be given to dogs as well I wonder? Ruby and I share the glucosimine/chondritin tablets that I get at Costco (okayed per the vet).

I get the 3V Caps from my vet but I know that Drs. Foster and Smith and many other companies sell them as well. I don't know about the missing link ones though.
Missing Link looks and smells like grass clippings that have been run through a mulcher. <_< You can try purchasing this product from your local landscapers.
An orthopedic vet was the first to prescribe the 3v caps, but you don't need a prescription. Many of the On-line dog meds sites have the capsules. You don't need a prescription for Missing Link, either. It makes their coats really soft. I only give it every so often--maybe every other day for a month once or twice a year. So far as the smell and look--The Missing Link I buy doesn't smell or look ike grass clippings at all--more like some beef based powder. The instructions say to give it every day, which I did for awhile, but their coats got really, really soft--too soft for a Basset. Less often seems to work better.[/b]
I tried it when it first was marketed, ten or so years ago. It seemed to exacerbate Bugsie's itching, so I never messed with it again.
