Yesterday we took a long walk with the dogs and Ringo started licking his paw a lot (lately he has been once in awhile but not a lot) and he would even completely lay down to lick it....he did this almost every block during the 2nd half of the walk.

When we finally got back I looked at his paw and saw that on the side of his large pad it was split. I say split because I thought it looked worse than what a crack would look like.....but with that being said I have also never seen a cracked pad either

I had read that using udder cream would help dry/cracked pads so I went and got some of that and have applied that about 3 times today.

Will that actually help heal it if it's split? and how long would this take to heal?

I clearly won't take him on long walks or anything until it's better. I think the cold and snow and salt/sand on the roads would probably make it worse.

This may sound controversial, but you can glue it back together with super glue. Just don't get it deeply into the pad. My dad does this to his weenie dogs and the dogs don't seem to mind at all, and in fact feel better afterwards because the pressure is gone from the split.
If that's a bit freaky for you, you can just try to pinch it together and then wrap it with gauze, tape, etc. Maybe some neosporin cream and some lotion mix on it first. My husband gets split heels all the time, and he sometimes wears those gel foot wraps at night, with a lot of lotion inside, and that heals him up.

Really that's all you can do. Keep it soft, let it heal up! Or glue it! *L*

My boyfriend called the vet yesterday morning and described his paws to him and vet said they didn't sound too bad and said to apply bag balm or udder cream on the paws a few times a day and see if they start to heal and then if they don't to bring him in.

However, Ringo always tries to lick the cream off after we put it on so he now gets to wear these after we put it on :p

He actually doesn't mind them much, not the putting on part but once they are on he pretty much ignores them.

Ella likes them, she was running around all crazy and runs up and pulls the sock off Ringo and takes off like she just robbed a bank

Here's another because he look so silly with them on!

My husband and I cracked up when we saw Ringo with his polka dot socks on! He looks too funny. We're sorry about the cracked pad though. It's funny that Ella steals his socks right off his feet. Doppler will pull Virga's sweaters off when we put them on her. It's pretty funny! Healing thoughts and drool being sent to Ringo!
