Hello. I am new to the group. Otis Darrell, our 3 year old euro basset has been dealing with skin issues for years. We have tried apoquel, prednisone, antibiotics, washes, ect.
It has been determined that he might have an autoimmune disease of some kind. No definite diagnosis. Are any other basset parents out there dealing with this? Any advise or help is appreciated. He has since developed inflammation in his colon that has to be treated with antibiotics and steroids. Seems like he is full of inflammation even though he is on daily prednisone now.

Bassets are prone to the oil form of seborrhea, which can be controlled with frequent bathing. given that you tried apoquel I assume he is itchy so seborrhea is not the likely cause . Have you done any blood/ skin testing for allergies and an elimination diet with Hydrolyzed protein for determining food allergies.
Thank you for responding. Not an elimination diet exactly. Have tried several kinds of foods over the years. None have made any difference. Currently On hills science diet chicken and barley. No other foods. The itching seems to be under control for the moment but now he has been getting abscesses between his toes. We wash paws with antibacterial shampoo several times per week. The frequent bathing seems to dry his kin some so we have been using coconut oil as well. His coat looks good right now. Was recently very ill with what the vet called inflamed bowel. The dr thought it comes from the autoimmune disorder. No for sure diagnosis yet. No allergy testing yet as the vet says that he will show as allergic to most everything. Also, he is 4 years old not 3.
Personally I would switch to a hydrolyzed protein diet for 12 week see if it makes any difference. Keeping in mind >90% of dogs with food allergies also have contact allergies. If you have not done so you need to get a vet that specializes in dermatology involved. It will save you a lot of money and headaches in the long run acvd.org | Find Dermatologist | Veterinarians with specialized training in skin, ears, and allergy
keep in mind allergies are an autoimmune disease they are the much more likely the cause of Auto immune dissorders than all other AI disease combined. Does not mean it is the problem or only problem just the most likely cause

Yes, diet absolutely affects this. Since putting our Dory on low fat metobolic (question she had pancreatitis and digestive issues as well as seborrhea, yeast). It helped with bathing and allergy shots. Bassets are so prone to lumps that are fatty, as was she, and this also helps tremendously with those.
The science diet was recommended by our vet. Poops have been perfect since this change. Skin less itchy. Major issue now is a wound on the back paw, red and inflamed. Have completed another round of antibiotics for it but no change. Washing with antibacterial anti fungal soap daily and using quadruple antibiotic cream topically. This paw has been like this for well over one month. Steroids down to every other day presently.

the one that works for that particular dog, unfortunately there is no one size fit all. Some respond to specific medication other do not. Some do fine with More bathing other do not it, it is a bit of trial and error
if the dog is itchy you may want to look into apoquel
