My basset has always had a sensitive stomach so for about 6 years, she's 9, I have been feeding her brown rice, chicken sans skin and sweet potatoes and green beans. Lately, the last few months she has been doing this weird gulping thing. It usually doesn't last long but obviously distressing for her. My vet said indigestion and give her wheat germ. I got some, feed it to her twice and it seemed worse. I have been trying oatmeal and beef bone broth but she seems the same. She is often eating grass, sometimes trying to throw up but just white foamy stuff comes out, not much. Her feces is normal. Has anybody had this gulping problem??

I had a similar problem a few months after I adopted my 10-year-old Basset last summer. In addition to what you described, he was making a loud dry-heaving sort of noise. My vet said that throat issues can be related to heart problems so she did some x-rays, but they looked fine. She prescribed some antibiotics and the problem was gone in about three days. It has come back a few times but never as strong as that first bout, and I have been letting it go away on its own. You may want to inquire about an antibiotic.

Hmmm, ok thank you. I am now almost thinking she is allergic/sensitive to chicken! I quit feeding her any, substituting beef bone broth and scrambled eggs and it has been over 24 hours since she has done it once! I'm really hopeful but I will definitely tell my vet your experience. Thank you.
