Sadie at The Bridge, 6/9/06

Today, I helped my sweet Sadie on her journey to The Bridge. As posted in the Health & Genetics Forum, Sadie was recently diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma, an aggressive cancer that originated in her spleen. The treatment was surgery and/or chemo, which both her regular vet & a specialist agreed would only give her a few more months. Because of her age (11yrs) & some other health issues, I decided not to treat it & just enjoy the time we had left. Sadly, that time was short. She deteriorated slowly over the last 2 1/2 weeks & Wednesday overnight and yesterday morning she was visibly weaker and showing signs of discomfort she had not shown before. I called her vet, who agreed it was time. He came to the house earlier today and Sadie died peacefully in my arms. In life, she was best buddies with my brother's 2 Dobermans, who both preceded her to The Bridge. In my mind's eye, I kept seeing them waiting for her. A few days ago, I made this picture which has helped me in letting her go. Despite the overwhelming sadness, I feel peace too. It was hard not seeing the happy dog I was used to.

Of course my funny boy Spencer had to add some comic relief to a very sad time. He is a VERY nervous boy whenever he goes to the vet. When the vet arrived at the house, Spencer went to the door. The vet stooped down to greet Spencer & Spencer peed ALL OVER the floor! He has never done that before. A vet tech had come along & she said, "Oh, he piddled." I said, "That's not piddle, that's a flood." Later, we laughed & my brother said, "The vet literally scared the p*## right out of Spencer!" So memories of this sad day will always bring some laughter too. Thanks Spence!

Sadie,
Your pain is now gone, though mine's just begun,
But I'll take comfort in knowing you can again run and have fun.
So go in peace my sweet girl, your job here is through.
You've given me a lifetime of love and allowed me to love you.

RIP, Sadie 2/8/95 - 6/9/06

Edited to add: Thanks everyone, for allowing me to post this. It helps to remember her and know others care.

I am so terribly sorry for your loss. Keep your memories close and I hope there is some comfort for you in knowing how much we really do care. It is so hard when they are just so sick and we are so helpless. Big cyber hugs for you at this sad sad time.

Take Care, Susan and Wilson

I don't know what else really to say! She is a beauty that lived her life to the fullest possible (which I know you assisted her with)! I know she will continue to be a wonderful dog with all the other pups once they cross the bridge. Take care and try to remember all of the good times. Take care Amy!

In my thoughts,

Oh Amy, I am so, so sorry! What a sad time for you. But at least you let her go on her terms, and in peace. You can feel good about that. Goodbye little Sadie, we'll miss you...

(I couldn't see the picture, I'm hoping someone else will repost it, so it shows up.) I loved your poem, too. made me cry...

Amy...I am so sad and sorry to read about Sadie and just loved your poem!

When my dad passed away recently someone gave me a plaque that says

"Do not cry that it is over...Smile that it Happened"

I hope this will bring you some comfort too knowing all the joy you and Sadie had together and will bring many smiles to your face when you think of all your memories together.

Take care and will be thinking of you!

Kathy

So sorry for your loss. I wanted to tell you that you brought tears to my eyes with you account of the day and farewell note. Also, laughter which in my opinion is the best medicine. Blessings and know that she is waiting for you.

I am so sorry for your loss. She is at peace now with no more pain. I'm sure she knew she was loved so much by you and your family. I bet my Maggie Mae was at the bridge to greet Sadie. Rest in peace sweet girl.

Sadie

I, too, am so sorry for your loss. Unfortunately, I lost my beloved Rosie two days before Sadie went to the bridge. Hopefully, they are running together over green meadows without leashes. I'm posting a new message about my loss, too.

I'm so very sorry for your loss.  It must be so very devastating to have to let your baby go to the bridge, but you gave her a last gift of recognizing that it was her time. I hope in time you can find comfort in the wonderful memories your Sadie shared with you.
Hugs and Drool,
Mary
