HI, My family lost our precious bassett in February and are just now getting ready to have another join our family. I never knew it would be so hard. If anyone has information about a puppy available it would be much appreciated. Thank-you

Have you considered rescue? There are lots of great dogs out there that need homes. You don't have to start with a puppy to end up with a best friend. Check out some of the rescue sites - you will be surprised at all the beautiful dogs without homes.

Well -- it is difficult to get a puppy from ethical, dedicated breeders, in part because they don't have that many litters. I know a number of breeders in New England, and right now I don't believe any of them have puppies available.

Keep in mind that while there are usually one or two pups in a litter that may be available at eight weeks of age, breeders hang on to some pups to 'grow them up' a bit, looking for their next show dog. Bassets can take a very long time to mature, which means you could wait for awhile. It can be discouraging.

The show season is also in full swing now, which means everyone's on the road chasing down points.

Have you contacted all New England breeders listed on the BHCA web site? If one doesn't have anything available, they would probably know someone else who does.

I have they are wonderful. I am in contact with all of them from Maine to Penn. they are all very familiar with each other. To be honest, I will only wait for a puppy from a good breeder. We are still grieving and I think it would be worse to bring in a dog that may have issues than have no bassett at all. It may sound so selfish and cold, but I will be more than willing to adopt an adult after, but cannot risk at this point getting a rescue that they guess is 7 and having it fo on us. Maybe I will feel differently in a few months. We have also decided that we don't want another breed. It is so strange how you can become so attached. Every little thing reminds us of her. Thanks for the input.
