Hi guys
I wanted to get a comparison of fellow Basset owners puppy weight.

We weighed our girl (Squishy) last night and at 21 weeks of age she weighed in at 40 lbs.

(digital scale - she was at 40.2 lbs. After we weighed me holding her then subtracted just me by myself)
We got her at 10 weeks and she was 19 lbs then. At 15 weeks she was 29 lbs. Then at 18-19 weeks she was 35 lbs.
When looking at her from above, she has a waistline and you can feel her ribs underneath all the skin.
I'm not concerned about her weight - the vet says she looks good (Not too skinny, not too fat...just right). But the vet says she's going to be in the 50- 60 lbs range.

Here's my question - Squishy is only 21 weeks old and is already at 40 lbs. It seems to me that she's got a lot more time left to be growing and will exceed the 60 lbs range.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has had a puppy at that age that weighed that amount and what their "final" healthy adult weight was.

....so much for having an adult dog that I'll be able to carry or lift

She managed to "sneak" up the stairs when visiting with my parents the other day. (My father wanted to see if she would go all the way up when I wasn't watching, so sneak isn't really the right word

I was not a happy camper carrying her back down... Although hearing her run around like an idiot upstairs for a few seconds was funny. She knew she was somewhere she wasn't supposed to be - my mother gates off that area so she won't go up since Basset puppy and stairs are not a good combo.

I would think given her current age and rate of growth, that 60 pounds sounds about right, if by 60 pounds you mean 80 pounds!

Lightning's weight has probabaly tripled since he was 5 months old, but he was a skinnier puppy. Your girl looks solid but not overweight. I'm more worried about her rate of growth. She seems to be growing awfully fast. But I'm not a breeder so someone else will have to chime in on that. What are you feeding her? BTW, she's beautiful.

At five months there is only a month or so of real growth left after that progress slows considerably see the follow link an look at the charts of growth for large and giant breed dogs. it will give you an idea. keep in mind while a large breed dog basset growth plates close on the early side of large breeds to the growth curve tend to steeper than large breed but shallower than medium, small and toy breeds. at 6 months a large breed puppy is ~80% its adult weight while a medium breed is 90% at 5 months subtract an additional 10% ie 70% for large 80% for medium. Given the dogs weight at five month is 40 lb 40/.70(large breed) = 57 pounds adult weight.

Stomps - love the name

Lightning is pretty cool too, but I giggled at Stomps.

Prior to about 3-4 weeks ago, she was on Eukanuba (puppy), but right now she's on Wellness, Large breed Puppy. But she's resisting eating. She's NOT a fan of it, but seeing as how I bought a 15 lbs bag, she's going to finish it before I switch to something she likes better. She'll whine/growl at it before stomping away.
Although, she's a fan of the Orijen Regional Red (I was using as training treats - I got a small 1 lbs bag as a sample and she really seemed to like it, but Yikes is it expensive).

At 16 weeks, my Chili weighed 19 1/2 LBs today!

Very interresting article Mikey and good food for thought. Thank you.

It's curious that the peak growth drops suddenly after 4 months, yet the energy requirement continues to increase. Then at 12 months everything levels off the maintenance levels.

YEah they really only fill out from between 1-2.5 years but not a whole lot of weight gain there... pretty minimal actually.

Funny but our puppies who just turned 6 weeks are already at arond 8 lbs. and are gaining so fast it's hard to keep up with them. I'm wondering what these little buggers are going to end up weighing when they finally mature.

YEah they really only fill out from between 1-2.5 years but not a whole lot of weight gain there... pretty minimal actually

Toughynutter see avatar was 48 lbs ~4year old at his agility weight at 1 he weighed 62lb and was the skinniest basset most had lay eyes on. Therefore when anyone says there basset is not overweight or is skinny I tend to take it with a grain of salt

Cannoli was 7 months old when we got her and weighed in at 47lbs when we took her to the vet. She's easily over 50lbs now after being spayed and on good food.

Puppy weight

Hi, kind of new here so I hope these pics don't fill up your computer, still getting the hang of that.

Snoops was 7 lbs when he was 5 weeks old (top) and currently 13 lbs at 8 weeks old (bottom)

His father is roughly 70 lbs so my guess is Snoops will be as big as they both have the same huge paws.

My puppy is 13 weeks and already tipping the scale at 22lbs. He's not fat at all. His mom was 75lbs. Not sure of the father's weight. At the rate he's growing he's going to be a moose.

Mikey Toughy Nutter is legend. I imagine hes not with us but is he your favourite dog ever? Just asking...did he get you into the crazy world of Basset agility?

Hubert at 5 months was 40lbs and now he is almost and year and weighs 60lbs. Eeyore is much smaller and at almost 5 months only weighs 23lbs - He seems tiny to us! So I guess it really just depends on genetics.

Monty is a year old and weighs around 40 lbs.
Jenny is 11 weeks old and weighs around 14 lbs.

It does come down to genitics ,you can over feed to get a fat basset that weighs more than it should but the parents are a good sign of what the puppies will weigh ,with some exceptions, and what they will look like.

You got lots of good info here – so I’m not adding to any of it – I will say that before becoming part of Cyberhound I would have thought that was small also because I have and have only seen mostly big hounds. But… Now I know better - there are a lot of hounds here that are on the smaller side and perfectly healthy and happy.

There have been a few days when Mabel drapes herself over my chest to sleep when I’m sitting in a chair that I wish she was one of the “small” ones – LOL She just hasn’t figured out that “lap” dog means lap – and not chest.

She’s a real cutie & love the name

Based off your pictures, Squishy at five months looks - size wise - exactly like Olive right now at ten months! Yeah, she's probably going to be a big girl :]

I got Daisy at 8 weeks, 9 pounds. Now she's 7 months (32 weeks) and 38lbs. I thought that was big, but apparenlty that's still little!

My basset was 11lbs at 11 weeks, 37lbs at 7 months and now at one year, she is 50lbs

Maddie is 5 and weighs 50 pounds; the veterinary says she is perfect weightwise. She is the smallest of the litter of 6.
