Hello all. My husband and I have a female basset. Her name is Charlie. She was born on 12/28/2009 and is currently 20 weeks old! I grew up with a basset, Maggie, but she was 1.5 years old when we got her, so this is my first time raising a basset puppy

We got Charlie when she was about 10 weeks old and she weighed 6.5 pounds. I always thought she seemed tiny. She is currently 20 weeks and weighs 16.5 pounds. She has gone from gaining half a pound a week, to a pound a week, to a pound and a half a week, and back down to a pound a week. (I think she just finished her rapid growth phase).

I know you can never guess a basset's weight, but I am just curious to see if anyone can tell me if there basset was about that weight at those ages I listed. And if so, how much does your adult basset weigh? The basset I grew up with was on the smaller end, only about 38 pounds. I wonder, at times, if Charlie will even get to that.

I know a lot of factors are involved, but I am just curious to hear about what other basset hound puppies weigh at certain ages. If you could share, that would be great! I posted pictures of Charlie, the most recent being her at 18 weeks!

To be honest I can't remember what my girl weighed throughout but I know when we brought her home at 8 1/2 weeks she was 9 lbs. She now full grown is around 60-62 lbs. She is however a big girl but her father is 72 lbs. and her mom is around 60 as well so she is from bigger lines. So I would say your's is small but then again I have a very large girl. Our boy who is a rescue and on the slim side is 50 lbs. Both are within healthy weight for their structure. Our girl though is a show girl from show lines.

6 1/2 lbs at 10 weeks is pretty small.. Both ours weighed over 11lbs by 11 weeks, and now at 16 weeks they are right at 20lbs. And all four, pups are from two different lines, parents were under 55lbs. But as long as she is healthy and happy is more important than size and if her length, ears and muzzle all developed normally, she may just be smaller than average when grown.
It is hard to tell from the avatar pic, but she looks normally proportioned. I say just enjoy the fact she will stay small. It will make bathing much easier.

Our female puppy, Ninja, was born 2 days after your Charlie -- Dec. 30, 2009. When we brought her home at 9 weeks, she was 7.5 pounds. At the vet last weekend, she weighed in at 22 pounds. I think she will end up being a smaller basset too. Our vet estimates that she will be approximately 45 pounds when full grown.

Scully, who is now romping at the Rainbow Bridge, was on the bigger side for a girl. I can't possibly remember her exact weights as a puppy, but when we brought her home at 14 weeks old, she was already about the size that our Ninja is now. As an adult, her healthy weight was 65 pounds. Our boy Larsen is also a healthy weight at 65 pounds.

I do like smaller bassets. (Although, really, any basset is impossible NOT to fall in love with!) So, we'll see about Charlie. I am sure she could have some crazy growth spurt or just stay tiny. Hig4s, you are right about it being a lot easier to wash a smaller basset hound. Charlie doesn't care for baths too much, (my previous basset, Maggie, never did either!)

Scully, that is cute that Ninja was born 2 days after Charlie. Is Ninja starting to lose a lot of baby teeth? We have been finding Charlie's teeth all over!

I would say Charlie is pretty evenly proportioned. It's just nice to hear about other bassets!

She sure is a cutie though. Stubborn, of course, but very much lovable. She does like to whine though! Oh! Also, she has yet to "howl". I just love the basset hound howl. I joke with my husband that when she first howls, it will be like her first word. I know basset hounds are known to be noisy, but I just love that howl of theirs

My Rosco has been hovering around the 40-45 pound range for the past 7 months now (he turned 1 year at the end of March). His father was big, around 70 pounds, but we don't know anything about his mother. The guy my wife bought him from fed the entire litter once a day, so he might've been a little underfed. Layla (roughly 1 year 9 months) is a tad heavier, although she looks much bigger than Rosco side by side. She has been consistently between 45 and 50 pounds (we've only had her for a month and a half now). To be honest I was a little disappointed at first that neither of them were the full 60-70 pound bassets I had heard about - until I walked them on a tandem leash. I can barely control them when they both go in the same direction, there's no way I could handle 140 pounds of basset stubborness. Like others have said, they are healthy for their size and they certainly don't want for food or attention.

Can I please ask if Charlie's ears are OK because when she was laying on the floor, it looked like she was trying to paw/rub her ears rather than playing with them, as you thought... and the same day you posted a clip of her whining so I wonder if her ears are sore or not!

I don't know how my pair of chunky sisters compare with yours.... here they are a few days after we got them, aged 10 weeks and about 10lbs in weight... and they played together constantly in the garden for several months and they just are still inseparable at just two years of age.

This was their first day with us (9 wks) and you can see the size of them by looking at the tiles on the floor, compared with the next video at just over 16 wks on the same tiles!

Here's Lottie and Lucie at 4 months of age playing... as usual... still quite chunky as they have always loved their food!

I weighed them at the vets last week and at 30 and 33 kilos they are pretty heavy for girls, but not really fat, as both parents were big Bassets. Lottie, who often sits up like a meercat for ages, has always been slightly shorter in length and a bit lighter in weight.

vb3- your post was pretty funny. I could just imagine your two bassets tugging.. but if they were each 70 pounds, I could only imagine how hard that would be to walk them!

SophieB- I am sure that Charlie's ears are okay! She plays with them all the time. She will just be playing with a toy then roll over and start playing with her ears. And as for the whining, she just sometimes whines when I hold her because she wants to be out and about playing. But since she is a puppy, I force her to rest.. and I guess I should admit, she is only a puppy once and I won't always be able to hold her like that So she is just whining because she wants to be playing. Although, she really rarely struggles to get out of my arms.. she'll toss and turn maybe once and then just continue to whine while she is in my arms! Your dogs are adorable!! They probably are a little bigger, but they sure are cute!! Thanks for all the fun videos. Bassets sure do make for entertainment!

CharlieSue, that's good to know Charlie plays with her ears all the time and it's not as I had wondered, her pawing them through being sore because we have to keep an eye on their ears don't we, with them being covered by those long velvety flaps, keeping the inside warm and moist where bacteria, that loves warmth and moisture, could affect them.

We are all so lucky being owned by the most comical and docile breed of dog and nothing comes close to Bassets and it's a pity they can't stay as puppies for five years as they are so cuddly when they are small enough to scoop up but at 65 - 75lbs, they are far too big to pick up because of their length and it would be awful if they became injured through trying to pick them up.

My son has got a big Husky and he just leaps up into his arms but there's no way a Basset could ever do that! Mine can't even jump into the back of my car and to get in, they put their front paws on the back of the boot edge and wait for me to 'hoist' them up into the back (Golf hatchback). I always scoop them up and lift them out, so that they can't jump out and hurt themselves.

How do you guys get your heavy Bassets in and out of your cars? I need a ramp for them but the only one I have seen was about £80 so maybe my other half could make one!

when we got Monty at 8 weeks he was 10 lbs and today was his vet visit for shots at 11weeks and he is 14.5lbs. however he is a boy and they typically are bigger

I think Yogi weighed right around 20lbs when I got him at 12 weeks of age. He wasn't fat either. He weighs around 60 pounds now, down from 65 which I thought was a bit much for him.
My last basset was on the smaller side, just 43-45 pounds full grown. So they do come in many different sizes.

We have had Bassets in various sizes including a huge male we rescued who didn't look fat, and was just solid, with a lovely big head and a long chucnky body to match and he weighed 79lbs one time when we weighed him on the vet's scales, but he looked in proportion. One of our smallest was a very neat, but solidly build female (her mum wasn't big) who weighed about 50lbs.

My current pair of sisters are 66lbs and 72lbs and the lighter of the pair is slightly shorter in length but my heavier Basset is longer and has a bigger head. Having taken her to just one dog show when she was 11 months (she won best newcomer, best bitch puppy and best puppy) the judge told me afterwards that she has perfect conformation, superb topline, excellent leathers etc etc and is a star of the future!

I then told him I wasn't doing any more shows and was there just for the 'experience' and catch up with her breeder who was showing my pups' mum... he said I should think seriously as she is such a good bitch! That was nice to know but I'd rather take them for some nice walks in the countryside or beach than round a hall... I enjoyed the experience for a few hours and to catch up with some Basset friends and my pups' mum and their sister who was showing and got beaten by my Lucie!

My Girl Josie was born around 12/9/10. She currently weighs 16 lbs. She looks to be growing every day though.
