We bred our bassett hound in March and we thought that she was pregnant because she had all the signs, but she doesn't seem to be putting on weight and it has been 68 days and no puppies. She has milk also. Do bassetts have false pregnancy often? Or do they go longer than other dogs? This is our first bassett. We wanted to breed her once before we got her fixed, but I don't think that it took.

Thanks
Stacy

False pregnancies are common in bassets, but so is primary inertia. I would have her x-rayed to be on the safe side that she doesn't have a single puppy but isn't starting labor. Also keep an eye out for mastitis (breast infection) and pyometra (uterine infection).
