Our 12 year old Basset crashed Thursday evening an we rushed her to our Emergency Vet in Nashville. They determined that she is now diabetic, her liver values were off the charts, and she had something going on with her neck as she was having severe pain when moved to one side or the other.

We picked her up the following day and took to our own vet for extended care to get her diabetes completely diagnosed and regulated which we now are giving insulin twice a day. After she got to our vet she was showing weakness in her left front paw and having a very hard time standing on their tile floors. Our vet thinks she slipped a disc in her neck but without an MRI is not 100% positive. She also did not recommend surgery at this point as Lily has been through 4 so far with having her spleen removed last year and her liver has been having a hard time keeping up.

The vet prescribed gabapentin and strict rest. Since we got her home Saturday evening, she has been laying around, she cannot walk on our wood floors she tries but her front left leg gives out and she falls on her face. We have gotten a sling to put underneath her to help her up and walk outside to go potty.

We are just distraught, our vet told us we need to be patient and give her time to heal and she should improve but its been 3 days now and although she is eating very well, drinking water, and can go outside with assistance and potty, she just lays around the rest of the time and doesn't move. We hate seeing her like this and are torn between waiting to see what happens or having a costly MRI done which if surgery is not recommended due to her health I am not sure what good it would do at this point.

Has anyone else had something similar happen and will she recover from this we are trying very hard to stay opotomistic but its very hard when she was running and jumping less than a week ago and now is lame.

Please help!:(

George ruptured a disk at 7.5 years. Took 3 months after surgery before he could walk on his own. Had slightly weak left rear leg for next 6.5 years but was able to run and keep up with other dogs. Later problems have put him in a wheelchair.
