Last night, Murphy was having alot of trouble breathing and gaging. So off to my fiance's sister's work, an emergency animal hospital. It took 40 minutes to get there, it felt like an eternity! Well, it turns out he has Bordetella (kennel cough). He just got his first round of shots on the 17th, and unfortunately, the Bordetella vaccine was not one of them. So he's quarantined for 10 days, on antibiotics and anti-inflammatories as needed. It was so scary!

Apparently, the virus can lay dormant for 3 weeks before showing symptoms, so he could have gotten it from the breeder, or the vet's office...who knows?!

And my regular vet is not open today, so I cant find out whether or not Oscar has had the vaccination before, although I don't think he has. So it looks like he will be getting a shot this week sometime.

Anyway, Murph will stay with me at my fiance's house this week.

Awww, poor Murph! The good news is, he'll be fine. It looks bad and the poor poochies are miserable, but with medicine, he'll be good as new in no time. George caught it from a friend's dog a couple of summers ago and when she brought her dog over here, she KNEW she was sick. OY, I was not happy with HER. It took about three or four days for him to start feeling better and about a week until it was all gone and he was really well again, once he started on the medicine.

UPDATE:

Yesterday he did fine, no troubled breathing episodes, which is good. Bill's sister told us to humidify him, then copage (sp?) his chest after, which is helping. He sleeps a little more than usual, but he still has his romps thru the house with his toys.

Oscar is getting his vaccination today, and he is very upset because we had to throw out all the stuffed toys. The rubbery kong toys can be disinfected, so they stayed. I told him to look on the bright side...he gets to pick out a whole bunch of new toys!

It looks like we caught it early enough, thanks to all of you for sending your healing drool for the Murphster or "Drooley-o" as my fiance calls him :D
