Hi all,

I’m used to having dogs dogs but I haven’t had a Bassett or a puppy before(we have always rescued older dogs). When my Bassett, Bunty, gets overtired she can’t settle herself. If out of the crate she bites but when in her crate she howls incessantly. Normally she loves crate and is brilliant when not over tired, when when she is I can’t seem to help her get calm. I assuming the biting is normal for a puppy but I don’t want it to continue into adulthood.

Any thoughts appreciated on how to stop the biting or help her to get calm.

chewy/biting is normal puppy behavior not sure what the actual issue is why not just provide her an appropriate toy she can chew and bite on.

Hi Mike, she has lots! I’m asking if anybody has any tips for me on helping her to calm
down and rest when she’s tired. Most of the time she loves her crate but when she’s tired she howls incessantly if we put her in and if she comes out she bites anything but her chew toys. It’s more about me helping her than it being about the biting/howling. Thanks

My dog was like that. As a puppy, when she was exhausted she would channel that energy into biting, so I would force her to sleep in the crate, which resolved the biting issues. She was just overtired like a toddler.

The howling when left alone in the crate gradually ceased as she grew into an adult. My basset reverts to howling only when there’s no distraction- so I always have to leave two kongs filled with peanut butter or cheese before I leave. This constant repetition of treat time when I leave stopped the howling. She still hates going into the crate, but she doesn’t howl as long as she has her treats. Honestly, it took about a year of doing this before she calmed down and stopped howling- it was a gradual process. It went from half an hour of howling to 20 minutes to 15 and so on.
