New puppy needs a name!!!

He's 7 1/2 weeks old and already ten pounds! So far (day two), no accidents, loved his first bath and is a complete cuddle monster.
Got a couple questions. He's pretty big (almost a pound bigger than his closest brother), at ten pounds, how do you guys suggest feeding him? I'm going to do a meal in the morning, one at lunch and one in the afternoon. So far he's absolutely crushed his first bowl in a matter of moments.
Also, i want to change his food from "purina puppy chow" to something organic. I know i need to slowly introduce it with his old food and all of that. I have also read you don't want to give bassetss anything high in protein while puppies since they can grow too fast and have bone problems.

Any and all advice is appreciated. You guys are great with info.
I'll be reading up on old posts too, thanks!

Do you want a human like name? If so you can check out baby name sites.
Yeah, i have a few ideas. Thomas, Brewster, and Gunner all seem to fit him well.
I was just thinking about you the other day, wondering if you had any luck in finding a puppy. Congrats.
I'm not sure what to tell you to feed as none of the foods I fed Yogi as a puppy are ones that I would recommend now....Funny how much I have changed my opinion of different brands of dog foods over the years.
Good luck on picking a name for your puppy. It took me forever to come up with Yogi's name.
Also, we would love to see more pictures and stories!
Cute puppy! Picking a name is tough! You'll know it when you hear it!

I have a 12 week old basset and we've been using Blue Buffalo food. He seems to enjoy it and his poops have looked good! You should check Blue out..

Good luck with the name and food search!
Gunner is a cute name. Good luck with your new puppy!
I feed Boomer 3 times a day; follow the recommendations on the puppy food sack for quantity.

Most food choices are personal preference. I lean more towards food with higher meat content listed in the first few ingredients. I also stay away from corn.
Not sure if he is named yet??? Assume you are going to neuter him?

We had one a male and the name my hubby out was HUMP-FREE BOGART. Bogie butt, Mr. Moose, etc... the silly things we call our dogs go on and on. They are such characters we liked the silliness of hump-free and Bogart was a perfect basset name for us. He went to the bridge 4 years ago, and now we have 2 females.

Good luck and post pictures!!!

Yes good point, make sure you neuter him. In my experience it really improves the behavior of male dogs especially when you do it early. But most importantly the world doesn't need any more "oops" puppies :p
Gunner is a good name.

Snoops is 10 weeks now and I feed him 3 times a day, morning, noon and night. I'm not too sure what the norm is, but Snoops weighed 7.5 lbs at 6 weeks and 13 lbs at 8 weeks so your little guy should be about right. I'm sure Snoops will be a big'um when he's older, just like his dad who is roughly 65-70 lbs.

Have fun with him and take lots of photos cause they grow quick :)
Be careful about using the dog food recomendations as far as quanity goes, they will have you over feeding your dog. For such a young pup about 1/2 cup at four feedings is usually suffcient and I would make moist for a few weeks. When he reaches about 10 to 12 weeks old you can increase the amount of food slightly at about 16 weeks drop him to three meals a day at 3/4 cup. Good luck with your baby.
Is it true that over feeding them will make them grow to fast and cause bone problems?

I definitely plan on neutering (and microchipping) when do you all think is the best age?

Oliver....maybe.
And does anyone know any good online resources for training bassets and general care?
One name suggestion. Had Lollypop been a male basset, we would have named him "Thurber." James Thurber, a columnist and satirist loved Bassets and used to publish his drawings of them. When I was little, my grandparents had a large male named Thurber (after James Thurber), who was the first basset I ever knew and the beginning of a life long love of the hounds.
Go with Artie. That's what I was gonna name Josie if she was a boy.
If I had not named Lightning Lightning, I was going to name him Gilligan (because he acts like my goofy little buddy) or Lincoln (just because I think that's funny). People think Lightning's name is so funny, but I named him that because he had what looked like a lightning bolt down the back of his neck. Well now that he's 12, the "lightning bolt" has lost its shape and is almost under his neck.
HECTOR is a great name for a big Basset boy!

We once rescued a big chunky Basset and his name was Harris but as soon as I saw him
I had to change his name to Hector and it suited him so much better. It soon became my
favourite name for a male Basset and everyone who met him said he looked like a Hector!
Oh man there are some good suggestions here. He's a cutie!! Love Gunner and Hector. Hector is especially good because he will heckle you till you're beyond the breaking point. We did three times a day for a while. Worked great!

We neutered at 5 months and did microchipping (great idea!!). Oliver is a great name for a basset.
