Hi Everyone...I;m new here and have two bassets one boy (spencer) one girl (Claire). My girl is pregnant and while I never actually saw my male "tie" with her, I'm hoping it is his otherwise they are half and halfs :). I'm positive they are his though because I wemade it a point to be very responsible while breeding her...there's no reason to have an unwanted litter

"Responsible" and you're not even sure who the sire of these pups is? How old is the bitch?

Perhaps Ireland doesn't have the pet overpopulation problem that the US does, although I seem to remember reading that puppy mills are a problem in Ireland?

In the US, thousands upon thousands of otherwise lovely pets are euthanized annually, solely for want of good homes. :( Unfortunately, backyard breeders are responsible for the lion's share of this unfortunate group of animals. :(

Many people on this board are rescue volunteers who care for the throw away bassets produced by backyard breeders and puppy mills. Despite great effort, resources are limited, and not every basset can be saved. :( See The Story of the "OMBR 24" to get an idea of the abuse and neglect rescue volunteers deal with.

These are some of the reasons that informed folks are not generally supportive of backyard/irresponsible breeding practices. :(

ETA, responsible breeders can and do have "oops" litters, or accidental breedings. When there's a question about paternity, it can be sorted out (at no small expense) by DNA.

Wow, It just never gets old does it? It amazes me that people on this board jump at EVERY opportunity to pass judgment and boast about their own superior practices.

We've all heard all these opinions/ public service announcements a thousand times..... Don’t you ever get tired of listening to yourselves?

I have just read the story of the Puppymill Bassets and am so glad that they were rescued.
Both my Bassets are from a rescue and one is an exbreeding bitch so I feel very strongly about BYBs and casual breeding.

There are a few other basset boards out there- I actually visit two others regularly, and really enjoy them. Each board has it's own culture.

The reason I've been a member of Cyberhound for so long is that I like the fact that there are some knowledgeable people here who do try to educate about canine health and social issues. I work actively with two organizations in my community which bring me into contact with the sad results of lack of knowledge regarding dog ownership and breeding- so for me, this board feels like home.

I've had dogs my whole life, but never stop learning from the people who post here.

Peace. :)

No problem, there is a lot of helpful information to be learned form this board... you just have to sift through the BS ;)

I'd love to be a member of your family getting one of those lovely puppies :D

I know you've been here quite a bit asking for advise on lots of health and behavior issues, and it sounds like you do appreciate the help you've gotten here- just wondering where you think the BS comes in-

I do think this board is a great resource, i enjoy reading peoples stories and seeing pictures.....

The "BS" i'm refering to is exactly what i was addressing in an earlier reply in this thread.... all the judgmental commentary that flies around as soon as the opportunity arises (often without even bothering to have a full understanding of the situation) .... ie. irresponsible owners, back yard breeders, puppy mills, etc, etc.

That's not to say that these opinions and comments are not 100% valid... however i do feel that a lot of the time they are given prematurely and unnecessarily.

SpenceNclaire, I'd like to retract my earlier statement and say I'm sorry for it. As a member of a couple of large forums and a moderator on one, Ive become a bit cynical because there are those who just want to stir things up and will post topics on this very subject (regardless of what type of animal) since it is such a hot topic.

Your bassets are as cute as they can be! I hope you'll continue to post - there really is a lot to learn from the very knowledgeable and experienced members here.

Once a litter is born, it's not unusual for people to decide that the timing is not right to bring a puppy into their homes.

Here are some suggestions for screening puppy buyers, to make sure puppies go to responsible homes. No responsible breeder sells pet puppies without spay/neuter contracts, and they do everything they can to prevent their puppies from ending up as shelter statistics.
