i got mine in the mail with my new issue of Tally-Ho.i just got done watching it and found it to be very good and informative.It will be a big help to anyone with their breeding program i feel.after seeing what was explained in it it will be much easier to pick out a nicer dog.

Better be careful Billy you might end up with a hound too short to hunt and breed by themselves.Then you might even start saying things like ,that line of Basset is not a real basset they are just field hounds.

Dean i've e-mailed with Mike a couple of times to try to get him to go to a AHBA Hunt or a field trial,but i know his time is taken up right now so i won't push him to hard,but he should try to make it to your place Labor Day to meet the LEGEND Y.Lee in the flesh.the experience will with out a doubt leave him weak in the knees for sure.he is such a bashful dog too!!!!

Please post a picture of Y.Lee so we can see his front legs.Then someone with a Show Basset can post a picture showing their front legs.
I think it will prove a point that a difference of 2 to 3 inches in front leg seperates the show and field basset.

The majority of field bassets that I have seen do not have a problem with leg length or girth. Some do have other conformational traits that are not exactly to breed standard. And there are several people who field trial and/or participate in hunt tests on the east coast whose dogs are show quality or from show lines: Ruth Paule, Joann Hilliker, Leonore Horiban, Ellen Ferguson, Linda Gonzalez, Elsie Tagg, Joan Diebler, and yours truly. I've been competing in field events for 6 years and the quality (conformation to breed standard) of the dogs gets better and better. Take care, Belinda. P.S. Y.Lee is a beautiful, very typey basset with short (albeit bulldoggy) front legs.

the bulldoggy comment just reminded me of a joke Travis told me when him and i were driving to a field trial at 4:30 in the morning!!! now i let him tell me these when his Mom ain't around. What do you get when you breed a Shih Tzu to a Bulldog?... A Bull Shih Tzu!!!!!!! i still get a good chuckle out of it.

I hope noone is misunderstanding my point.I will let Dean`s titles(that I greatly admire)prove the point that his hound is not less than any other hound.If someone with picture posting capability`s would post a Champion Best of Breed Basset Hound picture from the show arena,then a picture of Y.Lee. side by side .I just believe the added inch or two on field Basset`s front legs improve their ability to hunt.That is the reason Field Basset`s look different.

Notice the short ears, long, skinny legs and shallow chest of the "typical" field dog. Now lets see a picture of a fat, overweight show winner that looks like it couldn't run 100 yds even for food. By the way, I believe the standard states the chest should be 2/3 of the shoulder height.
There were many field trial bassets that met the typical image, but now most are much better, just as the show dogs were over-stuffed pillows. The hunting bassets in the AHBA have always been decent hounds. They have to run for hours, so decent conformation is necessary.
If you have a chance, please come to the AHBA hunts on Labor Day weekend in PA. Any person who appreciates hunting hounds will enjoy watching some of the best HUNTING bassets in the country.

so far all i get is the red "X" of death!!! Mike i don't think the extra inch or two helps them hunt better or run faster.if any thing it would i think throw their gait off some.i just this week looked at 18 basset hounds that i had at my disposal.about 13 of these dogs were Field Champs.not a one had longer front legs,they were all not going to SHOW Great either!!! with the straighter or inch or two taller you can throw their top line off to look more beagle like.now when the dog trys to run and scent he has a longer stretch with his neck to get to the ground.now if scenting conditions are not that great he has got to run with his neck stretched at a awkward position for some time which my cause some undue strain in time.these are just my thoughts on this,but it is a really great discussion and i would like to hear some more feed back from others on this subject.oh and if the legs are straighter as opposed to the wrap around front they should have they can't support there weight properly.

I agree. And sometimes the extra height comes from overly straight shoulders. Having observed with one of my own hounds how very straight shoulders reduces endurance, I imagine it would be quite a detriment to a hunting dog.

Pinehawk, are field bassets supposed to look different than "show" bassets? When I used to live in Golden Retrieverworld, they were different.

I'm hearing you say that field dogs still need short squatty legs, because it enhances their ability to track scents (nose glued to ground) for long periods of time? Don't have to stretch as far to the ground?

No Hub's that's what you said.i said with the straighter or inch or two taller you can throw their top line off to look more beagle like.now when the dog trys to run and scent he has a longer stretch with his neck to get to the ground.now if scenting conditions are not that great he has got to run with his neck stretched at a awkward position for some time which my cause some undue strain in time.look at some of the photo's(that's a skinny,young Y.Lee and Dean by the way) look at mustang sally's picture.now in your mind add 2 inches in height to her front legs...she will have a higher chest but a lower hind end... this will change the way her shoulder moves and the way the head and neck are held.here's something else i just thought of... since when do you see Basset's in the field running with thier heads held up like they do in the show ring? most of the time it's head down and i'm watching the south end going away from me at a pretty good clip.that's how they should be judged throw a rabbit in the ring and the one that catches it wins,it's got to have the best conformation it caught the rabbit quicker than the others!!!!
