The vet suggested I try a glucosamine-chondroitin supplement with Lady, but it didn't help much. Whether that was because her dysplasia was too far advanced or she's just too old to see any benefit, I don't know.

The vet did say to use the supplements for humans and not to bother with any of the foods which claim to have it.

What has helped Lady is making sure she gets exercise of some sort every day and upping the amount of fat in her diet - absolutely no low fat foods for her. I add a touch of flaxseed oil to her food because it purportedly has anti-inflammatory properties. I have seen some good effects from that.

Lady was on Rimadyl for some time, but came down with Old Dog Vestibular Disease. Even though we can't draw a direct relationship between the vestibular disease and the Rimadyl, Rimadyl has been implicated in vestibular disorders, so she's now on aspirin, with no ill effects. That was quite nearly the end of her, as she was unable to get up without assistance for almost three weeks. I knew exercise was important for pups with joint disease before that, but now realize it's crucial. In addition to antiinflammatories, I think it might be the most important, in fact. But that's just my own un-medical opinion.
