Some great pics. Good looking hounds!

Keep in mind nobody is trying to attack anyone on this board. We all just strongly agree that our dogs should be spayed/neutered unless the dog is going to be bred.

Keep sharing!!

well i hope nobody takes this wrong but I've had a couple martini's tonight. Gotta love those flavored vodkas!

This thread SHOULD get ugly. Why???? I guess it's because I have two bassets. Two bassets from a reputable breeder. Both are pets but they are miracles of nature. Perhaps they weren't good enough for a show ring and they are so stupid at times I can't stand it, yet whenever I have some kind of treat in my hand they are suddenly the smartest thing this side of Einstein and know EXACTLY what I was asking them to do.....

I know the difference between a reputable bred basset vs. backyard bred basset, I've had both... Anyone on this board that has had both can tell you the difference. It's in the legs, chest, eyes, ears, and most of all the mindset. Their ability to be labrador smart when you are holding something they want is uncanny. I've never been around another breed that can turn it on and turn it off like a basset. It makes them who they are. It makes me proud to own them.

It's the fact that a reputable breeder not only will take a dog back, but INSISTS on taking a dog back from their bloodline if it's unwanted. Of course that hardly ever happens because reputable breeders make sure their dogs are going to a basset loving type of home. I can call my breeder tomorrow and ask her the names or phone numbers of all of my dog's litter mates. There are too many good people on this board that work with rescue groups that have seen the horrors of bassets with crooked and long feet, or ears so short people don't know if it's a beagle or basset... Because those are the dogs that people don't mind sending back to the shelters.

Breeding a basset with a blue eye goes against most everything this board stands for. It's like breeding a hound where the ears don't go to the nose, or the dog is over 15" tall. We all love our hounds, no matter their lineage but people on this board enjoy knowing that their dogs are special to them, yet they know the hound not fit to be bred (even if the AKC says it's "purebred.") We must be responsible. We should relic in the fact that we own a breed that is not common. I know that I absolutely LOVE going anywhere with my girls and seeing people point and laugh. It makes me proud to be a basset owner because I know I'm not like everyone else.

I guess what I'm trying to say here is please, PLEASE have all your bassets spayed or neutered right away. Pyometra is a very serious condition in all females. Ovarian cancer is a common threat. Spaying your dog before her first cycle can add years to her life, and isn't that what it's all about? Having as much time with your precious hound as all possible?
