I've never quite understood the idea of "designer" breeds. They're just fancy mutts.

Yeah I feel the same way Kirska... just a fancy name for a mutt and there are plenty of those at any shelter. No point in making more on purpose. I'll stick with my purebreds or rescue before I buy a "designer" breed.

I should note, though, that I do love mutts. Part of their appeal for me though is their individuality and "underdog" sort of feel.

In regards to designer breeds, I remember one time I was in line at the Petsmart checkout with my mutt behind a lady with a puppy and when the cashier asked what breed the dog was she said, "It's a designer breed" with a very snooty attitude. I couldn't help but laugh to myself that she probably spent hundreds or thousands on a mutt when I spent $0 on mine.

I agree with Soundtrack that it's the biggest scam out there.

The reason I call it the "second biggest" scam is because when you buy a "designer dog" at least you end up with a dog. Withthe Cameroon dog scam you spend a lot of money for a dog that doesn't even exist!

The Cameroon Dog Scam I referred to above. Scammers advertise a puppy as free to good home, you just pay the shipping. If you fall for that and wire them the money, then they send you a message that there's a complication en route (paperwork, vaccinations) that requires you to senf more money. They'll keep this up as long as you keep sending money. The puppy never existed in the first place, they just use cute pictures they found on the net. They usually claim to be missionaries or aid workers or some such thing. The most common breeds involved are Bulldogs and Yorkies but it can be any breed.

The point of crossing any breed with a poodle is to get a dog that doesn't shed or sheds minimally. I personally think that's priceless, although I can't afford those prices. I think those puppies are about the cutest things I've ever seen. Bassets didn't pop out of a pod fully formed--they were made by cross-breeding. So by some people's definition all dogs are mutts. I see nothing wrong with crossing two breeds to get what some might call an improved "breed". And they charge what the market will pay.

My reply to anyone who tells me they have a "designer" dog is... "Who designed it? Anyone I've heard of?"

I'm not against mutts, I have a terrific old mutt now, but seriously...he's a German Shepherd/Husky MIX, not a "Shepusky" or a Siberian Shepherd or any of the other random names you could think of for the mix. And calling a Shep with a long fluffy coat instead of the normal coat a "Shiloh Shepherd?" What's that about? It IS a German Shepherd, just not a show dog, isn't that enough?

Once they start establishing a standard for their mixes, they're on their way to being real breeds, in my mind...I just wish they'd stop just adding doodle or poo to the parent breeds name. "Labradoodle, GoldenDoodle, Cockapoo" (I've never met a Cockapoo I didn't like, though, overwhelmingly charming and pleasant little dogs, smart as they come)

I wonder how those "Bassoodles" will look when they grow up.

Not my cup of tea but that is just my opinion. I never tire of looking at those basset eyes, long ears, sniffer nose, cuddlie neck roll, waggy tail, pink belly, huge paws and funny freckles. No other breed has the same attraction for me.

And that's why we end up with so many of them being abandoned - because they DO shed, in fact some of them shed a considerable amount. And they're NOT hypoallergenic. Not to mention the ones like Goldendoodles and Labradoodles are also grooming nightmares and hyper to boot. Anyone who believes that just because you cross with a poodle the puppies won't shed much has no clue about basic genetics.

Just as anyone who believes that ALL dogs are mixes at some point does not understand how different breeds developed in the first place.

Wow Miriam. That was incredibly bitchy. And I don't mean acting like a female dog. This forum has gotten extremely judgemental and nasty, with a couple of long-time posters leading the pack. I'm getting very tired of it.

I sure love our mix, though she was a pound puppy rather than anything designer. We get some of the basset traits, but we miss some of the inherent problems. Her back isn't as long, and she's not quite as pigeontoed as some of her "cousins". So I'm hoping we've got less chance of joint issues. BUT, I would sure like some more ears, Harriet's aren't very long and she's decided to hold them up and out so they don't droop. I suppose that means I don't have to clean them as often(should be another mix advantage), but I'd definitely trade the time I'd save on ear cleaning for loooong cute ears.

Having said that, Harriet's best friend (my mother's dog) is a Schnoodle. She wasn't very expensive, and she's a great companion for Mom.
