I was wondering if anyone had any recipes for homemade food. Given that most of the varieties of food my two can tolerate are being recalled we are going to cook for them for a while. They currently get steamed vegetables, rice and chicken. They have food allergies so wheat and beef are not an option. My main concerns are proper nutrition and weight gain. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Suzanne

I read something a few days ago written by someone who seemed to kind of know something, and according to them, most of the recipes on the internet aren't adequate. All I really remember is that they wrote most have inadequate calcium - ? - or the wrong kind of calcium? Then it went into some technical stuff about minerals that I didn't understand, so I stopped reading it.

You might nose around at The Pet Connection, especially looking at their links, as I also remember they have some info there or links to info.

I'm about ready to go homemade, too. I was feeling pretty good about Black Gold, til this corn gluten thing today. Yelch. Just too creepy.

In his book "The Nature of Animal Healing", Dr. Martin Goldstein recommends simply a diet of 1/3 grain/starch, 1/3 meat and 1/3 vegetables. Since I have a low-carb outlook, I've eliminated the grain/starch part of the equation and simply feed Rainbow meat and veggies. I think it's better to vary the actual ingredients to provide a wider range of nutrients.

The rest of mine are on Kirkland Chicken and Rice, which contains neither of the (so far) contaminated ingredients.

Thanks for the info! I am ordering the book mentioned. It has been interesting feeding them fresh food. They are slowly losing weight at the rate our vet wanted and other than their grass allergy all of the others seem to have been cleared up. Our vet said this diet would be OK but we need to add calcium and other vitamins. I'm waiting to hear back on exactly what and how much. If you do all of the prep work in advance it isn't too time consuming and from a cost perspective it seems to be about the same.

Thanks again!
