There I was on a january morning
Looking for bassets
With the strength
Of a new day dawning
And the beautiful sun

At the sound
Of the first bird singing
I was leaving for Rome
With the storm
And the night behind me
And a road of my own

I was looking for bassets
In the strangest places
Wasn’t a stone
That I left unturned
Must have seen more
Than a thousand traces
But not one was a basset

Then suddenly I saw a picture, no smoke without a fire:

After that I found one guarding a window with expensive bags. I tried all I could to get a reaction, but in vain:

I never gave up, I was sure that among Rome's 5 million people and dogs, there must be a basset, and in Tridente, I finally met Cæsar:

He was a really nice boy, big and baggy, shining fur:

Ceasar... what a grand name for a Grand dog! It's no wonder it took so long to find this Basset... there can't be but one Ceasar! I can picture him overseeing his slaves as they toil away, doing his bidding. Much like the Bassets we all know. :)

Isn't it great how Bassets bring people together? Caesar is a gorgeous hound!

Whilst travelling in Italy a couple of years ago I met a 'Bassotti' named Alice in a street in Rome; and another called Obladi in Florence. Neither owners spoke English and my Italian is very basic....but we all had plenty to talk about!

It helps if you always carry pictures of your hounds when on vacation...
