Poor Hilda.

As we neared the end of our walk today, we rounded a corner and suddenly encountered two young girls trying to ride their bicycles and walk their pitbulls at the same time. Unsurprisingly, one of the girls lost control of her bike and dog, and it made a beeline for Hilda and Thor. The pitbull assumed an aggressive posture, barking and towering over my poor bassets. Chaos ensued from there. Hilda freaked out and tried to make an escape. I somehow managed to hold onto my two leashes and pull the pitbull away by his collar. We walked the rest of the block to our house, then I noticed the bloody footprints following us down the sidewalk. My first thought was that she'd been bitten, but upon closer inspection I realized that one entire toenail was missing. The amount of blood was unbelievable! It was squirting out with each beat of her heart! I rushed her to the emergency vet where they had to sedate her and cauterize the wound. The nail had been ripped out to the bone, causing arterial bleeding. She must have caught it in a crack in the sidewalk during the scuffle.

She is still pretty out of it; she's been laying around all night. Nine month old Thor has been very concerned about her, laying next to her, whining and wagging his tail. Well, I guess if the nail doesn't grow back, that's one less nail we have to clip.

 This story makes me furious- those kids weren't capable of controlling an aggressive dog and their parents should have known better

I hope Hilda is feeling better today! Poor girl-

That's horrible, thankfully it didn't get any worse. I hope Hilda feels better soon.

edited to add: It's the irresponsibility of owners like that that cause problems for so many breeds. If people knew what the heck they were doing when they get their dogs there would be a lot less problems.

Poor Hilda! I would be so upset. Those girls parents should be notified and you should send them this picture. (And a copy of the vet bill!) Hope the poor baby feels better quickly!

I agree with Murray's mom, and I would send a picture and the vet bill too. You were minding your own business. Although accidents do happen, I agree, a kid on a bike with an aggressive dog is never a good idea!

Poor pup. Poor you! :comfort

I am so furious....you really need to send the pictures to the parents and a copy of the vet bill. I, too realize accidents happen...but the pit bulls are very aggressive and should not have been out with children. I can't believe people just can't use common sense....you and your babies could have suffered even worse injuries. I guess because I don't understand all there is about pits...I am a little scared of them.

You actually also need to report that to the local animal authority as each report of a dog attack on another animal or a person is valuable in case this happens again to someone else.

The parents of those girls should be ashamed of themselves and offer to pay for your expenses. My heart goes out to Hilda, bassets are so durable but vulnerable too. I agree with the response about notifying the animal control officer to file a complaint, so no other bassets, people or other dogs get hurt.

How horriable! You yourself could have been badly hurt too. I agree with everyone else about reporting the incident.

Hugs and smooches to Hilda and a big bellyrub for her worried brother Thor.

Oh, poor girl! So sorry this happened to you. Just so glad the dog didn't attack and do worse damage. I would report this incident, it might prevent a worse tragedy from happening to another person or innocent child walking their small dog. I realize it was an accident, and I have nothing against Pit Bulls which are beautiful dogs with a bad rap due to stupid owners and breeding. Big dogs and kids on bikes trying to lead them are not a good mix with any breed.
We were camping last summer and I was walking Bogie. A boy of about 10 was on his bike with a Golden Retreiver on a leash. The Golden saw us, took off after Bogie snatching the bike from under the boy. The boy fell off, was scraped and scared, and I was left holding an agressive Golden by the collar trying to get to Bogie who I turned loose. A near by camper saw the incident, rushed over to help, thank goodness, and got Bogie. They hollared for the boy's dad who came, apologized, and fussed at the kid telling him "I told you not to ty that!" A scary incident for all of us.
