Hello we have joined this forum as we very much would like a basset. We are not ready for one this year and we are trying to gather as much info as we can before making the commitment to a basset we have had dogs all our lives but never a basset we know any dog is a big commitment but have no experiance with bassets and would like to know some of the key points or inportant things any potential owner would need to know
My first andd only pointer at this stage, would be to make sure you buy from a REPUTABLE, EXPERIENCED BREEDER best found via the relevant Breed Club where in the worldl you live. This is not a breed for everybody but if you find a good breeder, you should avoid a Puppy Farm/BYBred Basset of whom there are too many. Breed Clubs have Codes of Ethics which should rule out BYBs etc.
The breeder should be the one person to sit with you, show you their ADULTS (not many can walk away from a Basset puppy!) and answer all your novice owner questions. And they should ask you as many questions as you'll have of them!
Good luck - owning a Basset (and there will always be more than one!) is a life-changing experience
Thankyou for taking the time to reply and give us some tips we are in New Zealand and have been researching breeders here and will be talking with them and researching some more
I recommend for those not accustom to the breed who want to know what it like to live with one Diane Morgan's Basset hound survival guide. https://www.amazon.com/Basset-Owners-Survival-Healthy-Guides-ebook/dp/B00I0GHPZ4
unfortunately ubb code does not work in newbie forum so you will need to cut and paste links
