Hi guys, I took Lexie to the vet yesterday as she was limping on her right fore leg for about 3 days. so the doctor x-rayed her and said that she as peridonit....whattie whattie aka growing pains - but the doc says that only bid dogs get this...have any of your hounds had this??? Basically they have huge amounts of pain in their legs constantly!

Panosteitis- Yes- many of our bassets have had it- done fine- and outgrew it Willie loved a gentle rubdown every night- it seemed to soothe him... even when he was fine There is some info on the health link from the main page. Give your baby extra loving!

Thanks Wendy, you guys are so knowledgeable - the vet said that only big dogs get it and this is the first instance of it they have ever saw!!! in well he called lexie a dwarf breed...

how long did it take for Willie to outgrow it?
The doc says anything from up to a year and a half and Lex is only 7 months now!!!

Yes, it is like growing pains in humans, at times can be very painful for the dog, can come and go up until they are fully grown which in a Basset is about 18 months to 2 years.
Our 10 month old pup,Bogie, just has a round with it, put on "Metacam" for seven days to relieve the pain and help with the inflamation. He did shiver when he hurt the most. Curtail activities like running, jumping, etc. and it will run it's course. It can return several times. For now Bogie is doing great.

Yep, my Daisy and at least one of her brothers had it, her brother Flash had it worse than she did. Daisy seemed to outgrow it at around a year of age; (keeping fingers crossed) at least she hasn't had a bout since around Xmas. I saw Flash in January or February as he was returning from a trip to the doctor for pano. Has something to do with fast growth, something about the growth plates having to work harder and faster to keep up with the demands of the body, as I understand it.

Daisy's and Flash's bouts seemed to last from 1 to 3 weeks at a time, Daisy was real lazy and slept a lot. Warmth seemed to be very comforting to her (she'd lay on or under polar fleece blankets and cuddle with humans as much as possible).

Hope Lexie feels better soon!

Both Mocha and Beldin have had it a few times. It was really scary the first time. Beldin had it pretty badly and he wouldn't eat and could barely walk he hurt so bad and would just lay there and shake and shiver.

"This too shall pass" though ... the vet said they should outgrow it completely by the time they're about 2 years old.

They've only had a couple minor instances after the first one and seem to be mostly fine now.

The first time I noticed it in Daisy, she was about 5-7 months old. She was walking through the living room one morning when she yelped repeatedly, loud enough to bring the house down, leapt straight in the air and ran over to me. I sat Indian-style on the floor and she jumped in my lap and cried and licked her right foot and carried on for what felt like ages. I checked her foot and couldn't find a sticker or injury, no one was even near her so she didn't get stepped on; I checked the carpet thinking she had stepped on a goathead or something, nothing to be found.

She did limp and whine for a couple weeks, but it scared the living daylights out of us all at onset!

Willie outgrew it about 15 months and only had a few rough instances. Poor Jake had a couple bouts- one with a trip to the ER on a weekend as he was hurting so badly. Jake seemed fine after about 15 months as well-
