I attended the Natl's last fall and listened in on the latest heath issue presentation. When we got home I ordered the DNA tests available from PawPrint Genetics and OFA. I don't have an intention of breeding our boy, but I did want to contribute to the DNA database and knowledge of the instance of various diseases in the breed/lines. I firmly believe that genetic testing is the way forward to healthy bassets.

So proud to say we are now one of ONLY 33 basset hounds with a Chic number. Cash also tested clear of LaFora, and MPS1. I also chose to allow the use of his DNA for research. I encourage you to get your dog tested, it is easy and not expensive, and to add to the DNA knowledge of the breed.

there will be only a tiny percentage of bassets witch CHIC numbers because of cost and the BHCA has partnered with Pawprint/neogen for most of the Genetic testing except MPS1 which current testing has confirmed is limmited to a few kennels. Pawprint/neogen has a check off to share results with researchers so serves the purpose of open research without being public and lead to Animal rights groups spinning such data bases as proof of the horrors of pure-bred dogs.
