This is my experience:
Advantix repels ticks so that they don't stay on the dog- the only problem is that Murray is horribly allergic to it- the first year he was on it was fine- the first time I put it on him after a winter break, he had a terrible reaction- ended up having to get a shot of cortisone to stop his misery. I've talked to other dog owners whose dogs reacted this way to this product.
So we went back to Frontline. On Frontline, the ticks walk around on him for awhile, but don't attach. This is a problem because they can hitch a ride home on him and drop off in our yard!
Recently our vet stopped carrying Frontline and started offering a new product for sale at his clinic. When I asked him why, he said it works better that Frontline- but because of Murrays bad reaction to Advantix, he recommended that we stick with Frontline.
We live in a Lyme state- Murray and I both tested positive for Lyme 3 years ago, when I developed a bullseye rash right before Christmas- even though it was December, there were loads of ticks active out on the State Game Lands where I was walking him- so now, I don't take him out in the woods unless there's snow on the ground.
This has been a big problem for me because I miss going out in the fields around here. I'll be interested in hearing what others have to say.
