Finding a basset hound has been so rough. I want to make sure that it’s from ethical breeders but I’m also not trying to have to take out a loan. I don’t want breeding rights and I intend to get her spayed when it’s healthy but I am struggling on how to even find local breeders.

If you are in America, try the BHCA website which lists breeders by State. However, if things are as bad re prices as they are over here (UK), you may do best to wait until all this nonsense re prices (Covid 19 - supply and demand) goes back to more realistic asking prices - if it ever does! My friend in Texas has just had a litter (well known kennel) but it may be too far for you, and I don't know what she's asking. They are only weeks old so far

Having lost what will probably be my final Basset (almost a year ago now - where do the months go), there's no way I'll be buying into the prices here, even if I wanted to take on another puppy, sadly. Even a rescued oldie is pretty much impossible to find.

There were a few good breeders in PA (I went to one (stud dog) for our first litter) but sadly those people are no longer with us.

FWIW between 1 & 2k is typical for a Basset from a preservation Breeder. There are respectable number Preservation breeder on both ends of the state the middle of the state tend toward amish comercial breeders. and as Teazelsmum says BHCA website is the place to go to contact breeder.

i know. I’ve only seen two so far that are charging $800 and one lives inTN and the other one retired. The BHCA website really doesn’t have many breeders with websites just links to people’s emails.

Once you have kennel names, you should be able to get to their websites without links?

Mikey - what constitutes a 'Preservation Breeder'? Is this something a AKC has drawn up, or the ABHC? Or ?

I live in MD and got my basset puppy from a breeder in PA. She is 10 months now and so far has been very healthy and seems to have no behavioral problems. Also know a person in my neighborhood who got their 5 year old basset from the same person. I can give you the name, address and phone # if you are interested.

"
Preservation breeding is preserving something that has a history and a purpose. People have cherished, cared, protected, and were guardians of these breeds for decades.

Each breed brings its own unique individuality. And every breed serves a specific purpose like being a herding dog or hound.

That purpose has morphed over time, to the point that many breeds are now companion animals. However, they still have the predisposition to behave a certain way and to do certain jobs."

..."There’s a difference in somebody who’s passionate about preserving the breed that they borrowed from the generation before and that they’re going to mentor the next generation versus somebody that’s just throwing dogs together randomly."

it is a refinement of responsible breeding in that there is also the purpose to improve and perserve the breed

a a big difference between thoses dedicated to preserving the breed vs those to breed to make money. Keeping a web site up to date is a lot of work. If you purpose is to make money selling dogs it makes sense to have qa modern uptodate website. MY wifes website on the other hand was last updated like 9 years ago, Soundtrack Basset Hounds.
Soundtrack is a small, private kennel east of Ottawa, Ontario.

This site is currently under construction, but hopefully it will be fully functional within a reasonable time.
LOL she has been in the States since 2013 and is now a US citizen!

In which time we have had BHCA absolute winner in Field trial and a runner up, Nationals winner High in Trial in Agility, Reserve Winners Dog in Confirmation, Record 4 dogs Completing a Triathlon Challenge at a single nationals ( qualifing in 3 different performance venues @ a single nationals,) (one with 4 qualifcation) The Basset Hound Club of America, Inc. 2018 National Specialtyhstrial- Basset Hound Club of America, - [PDF Document] pg 25 . Bred 1 dual grand champion 2 dual champions , 5 field champions 6 conformation champions etc
Yeah most preservation breeders require you to step out of your comfort zone and email of call them Also of Note you will not find preservation breeders advertising "from Championship Lines" because quite simply the breed actual Champions not some lessor off spring But….They’re From Champion Lines!
Every single purebred dog is related to a Champion dog. That’s how it works. Pretty much every purebred Rottweiler is related in some way to every other Rottweiler. So every single purebred, registered dog has “Champion Lines”
IMHO it is well worth the effort to call or write.

example of red flag breeder's websites

note Lack of CH FC DCH GrCH etc titles in front of dogs name,

"Home of European and Brazilian Basset Hounds ... " Because Eurpean andm Brazilian breeders will sell breeding dogs to anyone that ask. US preservation breeders either Highly screen prospective owners so they do not sell to someone that is not geting proper mentoring befor making breeding decisions, sell non-breeding prospects on a lomited registration, or maintain co ownership to influence breeding decision,. or have manditory spay nueter contracts.

lack Showing or trialing titles,
Triple registered with AKC, CKC and APRI.
CKC (contental Kennel Club not to be confused with CKC Canadian Kennel Clup and APRI) are choice of Backyard and commercial kennels because of less stringent requirement in record keeping and kennel sanitation and maintenance

We also ship by cargo or send by courier to the airport closest to you.
the above can only be done if the breeder is USDA licensed AKA a Commercial Breeder AKA Puppymill.

Ok so this isn't a new specific qualification that has to be worked for and awarded (presumably by the AKC or CKC). It's just what all responsible breeders who care for their chosen breed and want to be producing a recognisable quality bloodline, will hopefully be doing from the moment they acquire their foundation stock and start breeding?

vs preservation breeder website

note High number of CH or FC in Pedigress including actual sire and dam and same for dogs pictured, Website way out of date.

"was honored to be named as the 2009 AKC Breeder of the Year "
CH or FC in Pedigress including actual sire and dam and same for dogs pictured
Highlights from the Shows and Performance events
Champions, Title Holders, Registry of Merit (ROM)
History that acknowledges other kennels

again out of date

correct it is a more accurate description of Show/Purpose bred breeders. One can be reputable breeder, do health testing etc but not actual breed to better/preserve the breed
