Howdy ...

I'm thinking of fencing in an area for Jenny to roam around in. It might look something like this ...



Except squash it so that it would be a partial area ..... say the length of the back of a ranch house using the house and corners for one length of the fence. It could be about 20 'six foot male' paces long and about 5 'six foot male paces' in width. What do you think .... and how tall do you think it should be?

Anybody with pictures and/or ideas?

I've had dog runs of one sort or another at a couple of homes, and they're very convenient. I'd suggest giving her dog door access from your home into the run, which will make your life 100% easier, if you don't already have a dog door. Height would depend on her athletic ability--4 ft should be safe for almost any basset, and 3 ft would be adequate for most bassets. :wink:

We have a fenced in dog area in our yard. We used the side of our house. The kitchen door exits there with a doggy door so they can go in and out as they please. It's about 10-15 feet wide and currently 30 feet long as it runs the length to the back fence. We love it as it means we only have to clean one part of the yard and can keep it relatively basset proofed-

You've confirmed the idea for me and have added one I had not thought of ....

'cept the Poodle needs to look more like a Basset.

Poodle can probably jump higher than the basset, too. Best take that into consideration when deciding on fence height.

Also make it tall enough so someone can't reach over and steal the dogs.

I have a 42" tall wood picket fence that I used for my pen. The pen is L shaped, the back part is 32 X 32 feet, plus the side of the house of 18 X 15 feet.

I have a dog door that goes straight into it from the kitchen. I also put a gate in it for cleaning, or to let them out in the yard.

I like the way that fence looks. At the present time we have two houses, one in Connecticut and one (live in) in North Carolina. We had two Labs in Connecticut and that arrangement worked well.

For here (NC) I was thinking of a design that would be more solid, lower and smaller in square feet. It might even be brick designed to look like an English style surrounded garden with plants on the side minus the hound. Expense, however, might reduce my options to solid lattice style wood.

Found one that looks like what I'm thinking of ..... It would parallel the back of the ranch house maybe about 10 paces wide
and length as long as the brick ranch.

Sometimes I'm such a jerk I scare myself. Here I am searching all over the Internet to find a picture I could
show you reflecting my fence idea. Then the dawn comes in the middle of the day! DUH! Go outside and
snap a couple of pictures in place of a thousand words.



OK ... the bottom is a portion of the carport while the top is the back of the house including the porch.
Imagine the wall (like in the carport) creating a (higher) corridor
along the back of the house about ten feet out.
Exit the porch to a gate getting the human
slaves outside of the walled area while
at the same time Jenny has freedom of
egress and ingress within the walled area
and the porch. Now add some plants and
shrubs along the top and on the outside of the wall.

Hmm ... I wonder how much?

For less than $100 you can buy metal fence posts and deer wire fencing. We did this because we wanted to live with the run in place before installing permanent fencing. It worked wonderfully and was a cinch to install. We ended up moving within 6 months.

In fact, we pulled it up and re-installed it at our new house....we still want to put in a chain-link fence, but this works well until we gather the $ for that project.

We do live in a rural area, though. So many people have fencing like this.

The dog door is what makes the arrangement work. It's awesome!
