Hello I'm new to this forum and I love it. You have been really helpful in your answers about various questions on bassets. Now I have one.

My basset started dragging his hind legs yesterday. We had just walked him and had gotten home. He was fine, chased the cat before he came in the house. He slept on the couch until my husband came home for lunch and we noticed he couldn't walk. Now he just drags his hind legs, pooped and peed yesterday but not today. He doesn't seem to be in pain and still is eating good. This had to happen on the weekend when nothing is open. He still wags his tail and tries to stand but can't support his weight. Could impacted anal glands cause this? I'm scared it could be his back or hips. Thanks

No one on this forum can diagnose what is going on from a post, but I can tell you if it were my dog, I'd try to find an emergency vet and get him there, even if I had to drive a long way. My only experience with similar symptoms was a dog years ago, and it was a serious back problem. But that's just one person and one dog. Do any of your vets have emergency messages on their answering machines--places to go during the weekend when they aren't open?

Classic symptoms of a back injury. Keep him on STRICT crate rest until you can get him to a vet, which should be as soon as possible. Delay in getting treatment can make the difference between recovery and permanent paralysis. In the meantime do not allow him to make the injury worse by dragging himself around.

If it were my dog he would have been at the vet yesterday.

Wondering myself as well... I'd have had them in there immediately. Could cause some serious damage otherwise. Could be a slipped disk or some other back injury.

Hello again Thanks for asking about Buster. We took him to the Animal Emergency Hospital after I posted the message. It is his back. The vet gave us three medications to give him and told us to keep him as still as possible. He's been a real good patient. He's a little scrapper. I don't know what is going to happen from here but we are seeing the vet again next week to see if there is any change.

I hope he does well. When my Samantha had a similar problem, she was on crate rest for a long time. We really did enforce it, and she recovered and was able to have a long and happy life (15 years)

Hi there. I just started a thread on our Basset. We chose surgery as his disc was herniated and the drug therapy didn't seem a good option for ours. Please keep us posted as I am really hoping for you to have a full recovery!!

My basset still managed to eat even during her last hour - hoovered it down as always as I always knew she would.

But just wondering how is your Buster doing?
