Our four month old basset puppy is very sociable and enjoys meeting new people and new dogs. She gets bored at home and mischievous. You can tell by the wagging of her tail.

It has been suggested that bassets are not 'only dogs' and need a housemate to play with and either teach them good manners or give them someone to lead astray.

What do you think? Is another basset a bad idea, what breed of dog is best, older or younger for a puppy?

I believe strongly that the Basset does need another companion, preferably another Basset. However, I'd not rush into this - it's usually best to concentrate on a puppy and get it through the training stages (specifically housetraining) before taking on a second (or third, fourth, fifth!!). Our first Basset was around 10 months before we added a second. If it's all gone smoothly, as was the case (mainly!) with our first, then it's time to think about another. Preferably.
