Worm is doing a great job so far, I think. A lot better than Hank would be able to do, anyways.

Good job wwormy now you need to practice outside and other place like pet stores and stuff. Remember good thinks comes to those who wait.
Tell your peeps you want to start graduate level courses like nose to hand touches ie hand targeting.
you can also expand on the it yet choice game to the food bowl as well.

Oooh were gonna try treats on toes. PB does treat on nose pretty well. Trying to teach her to flip it off & catch it. But poor thing can't catch ANYTHING! She just let's it hit her in the face! Then states at you like, "why are you throwing things at me Mama?"

Look at you Worm! Good job! He looks very concerned that the treats are sitting on his paws with all his wrinkles falling forward. So cute!
We had to teach Doppler and Virga both how to catch food. Doppler figured it out with a tennis ball first and we made a huge freakin' deal about and he figured out that it made us deliriously happy when he caught stuff. He's gotten more paranoid recently so he doesn't do it all the time. But Virga will only catch stuff if you drop it from right over top of her. If you toss it to her she'll do the same thing as PB. She'll cringe away from it and then look at me all hurt and everything. It's pretty funny. Then she'll scarf whatever it was of course!

It is a game training excerise to teach impulse control around food
IT is a very simple game for the human at least to start but a piece of food the smellier the beet in your hand in front of of the dog When the dog comes up to grab the treat out of you hand close it the dog will paw poke with its nose etc to try and get the treat when it gives up open your hand if the dog move toward the treet close the hand until it sit backs and relaxes again. the dog does not get the treat until You are able to deliver it to him with out him reaching for it. Repeat. Over time the dog learnd that it must be patient and not pushy to get the treat Once this is done then you can move on to more advance As in wwormy's case leaving food on his foot till he is told he can have it. Even more advanced is leaving and walking around food scatter on the floor. The video is a good visual learning to on how to train this. IMHO it should be the first step to training with food. It eliminates the "my dog is to distracted to work around food" problem. It is also good for teaching the dog deferintial and calm behavior ie impulse control.

Ms. Peanut Butter, i used to do the same thing, and i'd have to find the treat on the floor when it bounced off my nose. one day, tho, i finally figured it out and now i can catch treats that are dropped at me from above.
Mikey, i know a little bit of hand-nose targeting because my teacher Mrs. C. taught us a little of that. my person makes me do that when i pull on my leash too much.
i would love to visit Texas, Mr. Hank, and yes, of course, Gandy can come over training is fun... ^_^

you might be ready to move to target an object. FWIW with a basset a target stick works better than the hand fpr heeling or loose leash training because you don't need to bend down
shape your target cue
by targeting articles other than the hand you can train the dog to go to a mat when preparing food, sending dog ahead agility etc
