When I got my two 9-week old sisters, my breeder had already been trimming their nails once a week, just a tiny bit at a time and he said that if I kept this up every week, their nails would remain neat and my hounds would be used to having it done and would take no notice as they got older. He said that if they didn't need doing one week, to carry on handling their feet as though I was trimming them and they'd think it's part of their routine.

We walk mostly around the fields, lanes and along the beach as I don't like walking along roads because of living in the country and liking the countryside, wildlife ec so their nails aren't worn down like some people's dogs' claws who walk on roads and pavements, so now their nails are thick and hard, I find it easier to dremel them and once they got used to the sound and get a few treats, they are fine about getting it done.

I have seen some Bassets on YouTube with really long talons and it must be painful to walk with them... or maybe they are long because they don't get walked at all!!!! Edit:: I was told that if clipped to the quick and they bleed, to push some cornflour into the cut and it will absorb the blood and the bleeding will soon stop.

How on earth do you get your dog to handle/stay still for scaling their teeth? LOL we have trouble just getting ours to hold still to brush them each night before bed.
Scaling??? My dogs love having their teeth brushed but how do you 'scale' your dogs' teeth?
Or is 'scaling' in your country the same as 'brushing' here?
