Hello all. It has been quite some time since I posted.

Molly and Marshall are 13 months now. They have grown nicely and are wonderful family members, other than the chewing.

I was wondering if you all have found that bassets chew on everything (more than other dogs)? I have formed this opinion. I buy them toys and chew strips. They have chewed on everything in our back yard including the back of our house and several things inside the house when they had gotten out of sight. I feel this is probably due to boredom, but don't know what else to do. I can't be with them 24 x 7.

I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I am really not looking for solutions.

We are actually planning to fence off a portion of our back yard just for them to protect the kids' wooden playset from further damage. Beyond this, I don't know what else we can do than just live with it.

I definitely think its just a dog thing. Bloo is always chewing on stuff. mostly the compacted rawhide bones we buy and sticks from the back yard. Does anyone know if this behavior slows down when they get older?

Luke used to chew on everything. He would carry around sticks twice his size and chew on them. He still chews a lot. When he tried to eat the fish tank stand I knew we had to take a more active role.

We tried a Kong, but after the first minute he would have nothing to do with it anymore, no matter what we put into it. We finally solved most of the problem by giving him bones. I get beef shin bones cut into about 1 inch lengths and give them one every 2-3 days. I also give them a bigger one, maybe 5 to 6 inches long every once in awhile. He also goes through coke bottles, both the 2 liter and the 20 oz ones faster than we can empty them. That seems to have curbed most of his urge to chew on other things. He still chews some things up, but I think that is more in irritation at us being ignoring him or being away longer then he thinks we should be.

Oh, and I barbecue with real wood, he has taken a liking to the Mesquite chunks. He is still the weirdest dog I have ever met.

Nicky chews on wood chips from the firewood or mulch from the garden all the time. He hacks up wood chunks once in a while, but it doesn't seem to hurt him and there's certatinly no way to stop him short of vacummng the yard.

Be grateful it's wood and not rocks. Our Bogie has had two surgeries to removed rocks from blocked instestines, because he swallowed rocks to large to pass. He now wears a muzzle when he is outside and we are NOT able to watch him or be with him. We had to add flexible screen webbing to the muzzle because he learned he could get his tongue through the holes and lick up things. He has adapted to it very well, can pant in hot weather, drink water, and bark. We still keep a watchful eye on him and check on him often when he is in the yard with it on. He has hung it on a low tree limb before.

This might be an option if all else fails with your wood eaters.

We camp alot and the muzzle goes with us. Rocks seem bo be everywhere.

Our Lily has turned our garden hose into that separated snake on the "Don’t Tread On Me" flag. Old (and PRIZED!!!) LPs pulled out of their jackets and chomped to bits. This list goes on. Her furry and non-furry squeaky toys? She chews, but doesn't eat them.. I've found a really good chew item to slow down (but certainly not stop) other undesired chewing: I cut her several one foot lengths of one inch, white PVC pipe. It's a noisy toy when she drops it on the hardwood floor, but Lily LOVES it and they last forever.
