I have recently got a rescue basset and he is awesome and totally chilled out with the family until he saw our cat and twice now he has tried to take a chunk out of her obviously they have been kept apart from the start and it has only been by chance our basset nearly got hold of her.

any advice please on going forward

Lightning isn't aggressive toward my cat, in fact they are almost disturbingly close. But sometimes Lightning gets a little too aggressive with his playing, so I make sure the cat always has a way out of the room that Lightning doesn't. For instance, the baby gates that I use to keep Lightning from having free rein of the house are set high enough that the cat can scurry under should he need to. But frankly, lately Lightning's been the one trying to get away from the cat! Luckily he has dog doors. If your cat still has its claws, I would think he'll learn very fast to defend himself. Until then, of course, you need to always be around when the two are allowed to be together.
