Hello. This is Scout. Ten months old, 42 lbs and 19% basset hound. When I adopted him as a 6 week old from the humane society, I was told he was a Dachshund. I had recently lost a very beloved dachshund and was unpleasantly surprised to discover his genetics as he grew and grew. However, we love him!
We knew nothing about bassets. But I’ve been reading a lot in this forum. He has had the “mystery foreleg limp” for three months. 2 vet visits and sets of xrays show nothing. He limps a short time when he stands up. Otherwise He runs and plays normally. I believe the Dasequin I put him on a few weeks ago has significantly diminished the “severity” of the limp. It used to look as if he had a broken leg, now it’s slight. We do not want to visit an orthopedic specialist as advised by our vet. However I’m wondering if I should consider a neoprene type carpal support band when he’s going to be extra active (like a puppy play date). Thanks for any advice.
Even though he’s only part bassett he seems highly “bassetty” in personality, temperament and the legs! I hope I’m allowed to post about him.

He is definitely knuckled over a support sleeve might help in eliminating some pain if that is the cause. . if it were done earlier when it first appeared it might have corrected the problem chance for changing are very small at his age. Knuckling is a soft tissue problem with the ligaments in the carpel (wrist) of the dog not correctable with surgery. On the limping, is it always on the same leg or does it appear to affect on leg one month and another the next etc.? If it moves around on around a 3 week time frame have Vet check for Pano when he is limping It can show up on x-ray if done at the right time,.

he look like a lot of basset ./lab mixes I have seen

Thank you Mike! I read the links. I hate that we missed an opportunity. It has always been the left leg only. It doesn’t appear to pain him but I think he’s a higher pain threshold dog. I know two of his brothers and they both have the same limp. I plan to share this info with their owners. I also plan to get a support for the left leg. Do you know what this might mean going forward through the years?

fwiw given the humane society could not get the breed right I doubt they have the age correct as well. 1 ortho issues do not get better with age, While many with legs worse than his seem to have no problems the fact he is limping is not a good prognoses for being pain free long term. Unless the problem causing the limping is PANO, then it is self resolving and not a problem. The Knuckling over issue is going to persist.
