Both my cats got these huge lumps on their sides from the rabies vaccination this year. Our vet said that they have contacted the manufacturer who assured them it was normal and said it happens quite often. I had never had an animal react until this year though! I think it was right around 2 weeks after recieving the shot-just long enough that I didn't suspect the shot when it first appeared on one cat, causing me to have to take the cat to the vet.

In RI the law requires a Rbies vaccine every two years when it is proven that the effectiveness of the vaccine is greater than 3 years in all cases this put an unecessary risk of adverse reaction without any corrisponding public health benefit. That is what is going on with all these vaccine iniatives get the states laws in tune with best medical practices.
Mikey T -- Rhode Island adopted the 3 year rabies protocol on April 15, 2010 (see below). All 50 states now recognize and allow the 3 year rabies vaccine, so don't let your vet try to tell you otherwise.

RHODE ISLAND--3 Year Rabies Booster "transition policy" announced by State Vet.

New R.I. Rabies Regulations Close to Approval, Providence Journal 2/21/10 http://www.projo.com/health/content/rabies_vaccinations_02-21-10_QVHH1UG_v13.36f414d.html

"New rules, expected to go into effect about March 16, change the mandatory vaccination period from two to three years. In the meantime, the state veterinarian, Dr. Scott Marshall, has created a transitional policy so that pets now protected aren’t reimmunized unnecessarily just because the old regulations have not yet expired. thanks It explains why I have not recieved the the your dog are due for card in the mail the send out a month before the experation which would have been the end of this month under the 2 year scheme.

the new regulation The State of Rhode Island Manual for Rabies Management and Protocols relies on manufacture recommendations so a the rabies challenges are complete and vaccine intervals increased the law does not have to be rewritten to take advantage. The work of Kris and her group has done in this area should be heartly commended by all pet owners.

Hi All,
I have to agree with Wworm on at least one aspect of this. Although I know the intent is good, these posts are not generally helpful. Most of us won't plow through a bill unless we are passionate about an issue. Even then, it's hard. It would be much more effective, if the poster wants to continue to make these posts, he or she add a short summary paragraph at the start of the post so we know the general issue, then provide a link to the bill.

There is now a medical exemption in the rabies vaccination requirement for dogs in California. If your dog is deemed by a veterinarian as being too ill to be vaccinated, it can be exempted with a waiver written by the veterinarian.
