So one of my friends got a Basset from this "Breeder" something about this breeder seems off. They spent 3k on their Basset. 馃槼 We got our 2 for more than half of that. Has anyone heard of this breeder?? Stud Hound Bassets, are these hounds really worth the 3k? Their color and everything about them look off to me. I'm not a professional so I wanted the ask you all what your thoughts on them are.

You could get a Basset from a preservation breeder for 1500-2000 in my area! The fact, they sell brindle and "RARE" colors at a higher price, is an indication that they only breed for profit. From breed standard,"Any recognized hound color is acceptable and the distribution of color and markings is of no importance" Brindle is not a natural basset hound color and most likely the result of cross breeding. There is no indication pedigrees, or Registration with a quality pure bred registry , Selling a blue eyed basset which is a very serious fault likely at a premium,. Claim to be an Animal Behaviorist but has no credentials Personally I would stay very far away from this breeder. There is no indication that the Breeder does any of the BHCA recommended genetic tests The breeder provided no indication of Showing in conformation or Field Trials so the claim of breeding to better the breed is a fallacy. FWIW the reason they offer VIP transportation is because Simply flying would require them to be registered with the USDAA and there kennel can not meet those ridged requirements, for example of a Quality Breeder see Topsfield Basset Hounds or Cloverhill Basset Hounds

Hate to say but sadly I have been shocked due to finding out someone near me a few yrs ago found cages stacked on cages of dogs that were being "bred" for crufts they were in appalling condition but were rehomed but they couldn't prosecute the breeder due to him being to do with crufts...also bassets are not allowed in crufts now due to them being so inbred..but tbh this is case with many dogs now even the standard go to black lab etc..the vet some yrs ago looked over my old boy who was middle aged and not an old boy as he is now but back then he was middle aged I guess you would say..but vet said his throat too narrow his jowels too far down etc the list went on..and I thought I'd been to best of the best ie did my research tracked down what I thought was best breeder..and back then i thought that because breeder was part of crufts and all these things that that was the best breeder..but no I don't think so now due to shock I got finding out about another breeder who was part of crufts treating those dogs so badly. The point I'm trying to make here us do not be fooled just because someone seems to have all the right credentials etc..dig deeper and be absolutely sure. The Basset Hound is its own dog it's own category or it should have its own category lol as they not like any other dog they are different in every way and need an owner who has all the knowledge required about the breed to look after them well..they need special treatment they not like some mongrel etc..sadly many bassets get taken to kill shelter because owner realise they can't look after them all there needs..ie endless slobber and mouth wipe checking bones in legs are OK building up strength in them from puppies with correct diet..they also cannot eat certain things like brocoli which I saw some.idiot on you tube feeding his Basset.. also people don't realise you can't play with their ears rough etc so many things it's endless.I love my old boy but tbh even with a good breeder I fell they so in bred now they way past what they originally were that I wouldn't get another.

" bassets are not allowed in crufts now due to them being so inbred..": no that is not the case Basset Hounds in Germany are being disqualified if the ears can touch the ground under there new animal right "cruel breeding" in England a basset are checked for eye conditions conjunctivitis, et al.

" fell they so in bred now they way past what they originally were that I wouldn't get another. " then you really do not understand the development of the breed because they were highly inbred at the origin with not a lot of diversity in the foundation stock, The Early History of the Basset Hound in England, 1874-1921

there are many the basset hound of today vs year ago can not preform the task it was bred to do. If one look at the early Victorian era history the breed was for the show ring not to hunt it was only later that they were used to hunt. In the USA BHCA was begun by hunter and Field trialers not Conformation ring specialist and we still carry on that tradition [/u from BHCA History "Until the mid to late 1960鈥檚, the Club had continued to be guided by the Field Trialers, a normal progression of leadership since they were the ones that had started the Club. Astutely, as pointed out by Ms. Braun in her book, They could foresee the day when it would be possible that the Club would be governed by persons who might be unsympathetic, perhaps even opposed to the sport. Bill Rider proposed that a committee could be formed to look after the interests of field trials. The Board appointed him chairman of the Field Trial Rules and Running Order committee. In 1963, the AKC agreed to give Bassets running rules of their own although they are still, largely, run under the same rules as Beagles. By 1969 the committee, as it is known today, came into being. Each trial giving club has a representative on what is now called the Field Trial Advisory Council. "

life expectancy of a basset hound is on par with dogs of their size, How Long Do Dogs Live - Dog Breeds and Life Expectancy | PetMD and only one year less than the much smaller beagle. Dogs are an anomaly in the animal kingdom where smaller ones are longer lived.,
Thanks Mikey :) In fact my son said something similar yesterday..our old boy is very large so the lady on here with a 21 yr old B. hound isn't such a suprise then as its female and most likely small.

21 is extremely long for a basset hound Had one 17 years old typically 12-14 then again we had puppy sold to a breeder friend just die because of something I never heard of before and not total unusual at that that age,. Defining Testicular Torsion in Dogs
The torsion thing can happen not just Testicular but also stomach and can happen i this breed due to long body etc..can be avoided by making sure to 1.feed smaller amounts more often ie 3 meal a day instead of 2 large and 2.Wait at least 40 mins before you exercise them.just put that out there as maybe of use to some1 1day.
