I was just wondering if anyone has read the following books and if so what did you think of them? I put these books on my Christmas list so I am hoping they will be good! I love reading all kinds of dog books whether it be training books or dog stories like the All Creatures Great and Small books by James Herriot. My favorite training book is by Brian Kilcommons, Great Dogs Good Owners. Anyone have any other recommendations?

On Talking Terms with Dogs: Calming Signals by Turid Rugaas

The Dog's Mind-Understanding Your Dog's Behavior by Bruce Fogle

Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson

"Marley and Me" is my favorite dog story. It's about an owner and his lovable but challenging Yellow Lab. "Dog is My Co-Pilot" is also very good. The book is a collection of stories about people and their friendships with dogs. It was put out by Bark magazine. I think a new book called "Woof" by the editors of Bark is coming out soon.

To tell the truth, I thought this book was of no value, and it was expensive--like about $20.00 for 20 pages. The one thing I took away from this book is that yawning is a dog calming signal, and if you want to calm your dog, yawn. Didn't work for mine. If you want a good book on dog behavior and signals, spend a few dollars more and buy Canine Body Language by Brenda Aloff.

The Dog's Mind-Understanding Your Dog's Behavior by Bruce Fogle. I don't know anything about this one.

Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson. Jean Donaldson's books are ok, but I feel her picture of dogs is pretty limited by her rigid adherence to operant theory as an explanation for all dog behavior. The use of the operant model is out of date, and learning theory has moved way beyond that these days, both in explaining dog behavior and human behavior. A better book, covering the same sort of material is Patricia Mcconnell's "The other End of the Leash.[/b]
