Basset Puppy Going Crazy over food!

2567 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  vb3
I have a 10 week old Basset that goes crazy for food. I'm feeding her about a 3/4 cup in the morning, in the afternoon and at night. I can still see her ribs, though, so I don't think I'm overfeeding her.

She scarfs her food down so fast that sometimes she throws up. I can see where she's sucking in her belly to eat as fast as she can and she always seems hungry. That worries me because of the bloat issue.

Any suggestions on what I can do differently?

I'd say she needs more food. And at that age I'd be feeding 3-4 times a day, their stomachs are too small to hold a day's or half-day's worth of food at that age. The actual volume of food is not as important as the amount of nutrition consumed, a food with quality ingredients will generally be more satisfying and satiating than a larger quantity of nutritionally poor food.

Bloat is almost unheard of in young puppies.
Yes Bloat is almost unheard of but it can happen. I had a club member friend who nearly lost one of her puppies to bloat with her last litter. You could also try one of the special bowls or throwing a tennis ball in the bowl with her food to slow her down. They then have to slow down eating and can't scarf it as fast.
Thank you...I'll try feeding more often.
We got Rosco one of those bowls with ribbing in the middle to slow his eating down and it helped a lot.
